Title: What are you tying?
Post by: Funeral Of Hearts on January 10, 2011, 08:29:39 PM
Well i've been getting antsy and planning trips for the year, one of which will be back to the west kootenay's for the columbia river caddis hatch (lived in Castlegar a year and a half ago and was spoiled with such great fishing opportunities).
Today i upgraded my tying vise from a cheapo one that came with one of those "walmart special" fly tying kits to a Renzetti Traveler. So now im going to tie a bunch of flies. Im going to tie some chronomids, kauffman stimulators, royal wulff, and various nymphs to name a few...

What are you tying during these winter months?

Hook, good thread!  Last couple months/lately I've been focusing on chironies. the collection is growing daily.   (you can NEVER have too many)
Been experimenting with different patterns and unconventional materials.  snowcone green-red-butts, anti-statics and little green ones are my current faves.  Besides the chironies, pheasant tail mayfly nymphs, damsels and uv beadhead leeches.
Nice way to end the day with a cold beer, hockey game on the tube and sitting at the vice!
Can't wait for stillwater season, lol!

I'm currently working on my scud collection. I was in merritt last summer and was outfished by a few friends who were using scuds so Im determined to learn the ins and outs of tying and fishing these little critters.

just remember guys when tying chironies that you want nice slender tapered bodies. I see some guys tie them and they are all bulgy, pregnantly chubby, or what have you.  Its all about figuring out which materials to tie in at the rear of the hook and which to tie at the head and wrap down and back  ;D

here is an example:

normally you want them to taper to the thickness of the bead but there is a few patterns like this one that you actually want a big fat looking thorax on the fly. This fly is called the Pornomid and has saved a few trips for me before  ;D it fishes great way down deep especially in clear lakes.

here is a tip - if you tying a flashabou body, tie it in at the head (bead) and wrap to the rear and back to the head. I do this for 2 reasons, 1 it helps lock the material down and leaves no gaps and 2 it makes the fly more durable because if a fish cuts a bit of it you can clip it without the entire fly coming aprt. Also coat all of mine with Brushable Loctite which makes them VERY durable
