So what does every one use for a waterproof camera while fishing? I bought my brother a fuji film xp10 for christmas and we are very unhappy with the quality of pictures, im thinking of taking it back and upgrading, any reccomendations? I personally use the old pentax optio and never have any problems.

Pentax Optio W30. Works fine for me I guess. I do find that the majority of the photos don't turn out how I like.

I got an "Olympus Stylus Tough 3000" for Christmas, takes underwater HD video up to 10 feet deep, plus being waterproof, it's also shock proof and freeze proof, gonna try it out tomorrow or Monday.
Anyone got one of these ??

Alot of these cameras have come back to stores because they started to leak. This was the reason I went with the Olympus stylus tough series and it has been great.

I have taken alot of under water shots. A good way to do it is get your self a monopod this way you can put the camera on the end then put the camera on the timer mode and dip the camera underwater. This will take great shots of fish without spooking them. I got a monopod at XS cargo for like $8

Thanks for the tip, as I am new to the underwater photo thing ;)

Olympus Stylus is what I've been using.
-
Panasonic Lumix TS1. 12 megapixels, plus HD vid. Waterproof and shockproof (haven't tested the latter). I used to use the Olympus stylus cameras (I owned two stylus "weatherproof" cameras) which took great outdoor photos, but poor indoor photos. The Lumix has solved my indoor photo problems! Highly recommended... if you can find one...;)

I received a generous GC for Best Buy over the Holidays. I was hell bent on buying a waterproof camera. I purchased and returned the Olympus tough 6200 and the fuji xp10 and they both took unacceptable photos for the price! They also didn't seem that "tough" to me and some of the plastics looked cheap and brittle and were very awkward to hold in my hands.
As Flyfishing Magician said the Panasonic TS1 seems to get excellent reviews as well as the new Canon D10. If I could have found one of those I may I have bought one.
At the end of the day I ended up with a non-waterproof camera.

only buy the best.....PENTAX W-90.
you wont be dissapointed.
-
Olympus stylus cameras all the way ;Dnever had a problem with mine.
-
X2 Panasonic Lumix, I have never been happier with the quality of pictures this unit produces as well, HD video.

X 2!! ;)

Might be worthwhile to look at the Panasonic DMC-TS-10. It's cheaper than it's big brother the TS-2. It has most of the same features. I'm thinking of getting this one myself. Look in the US. Way cheaper and warranty transfers over.

Yup, I have one. I have been using it since April and it is awesome. Excellent picture and video quality, and one of the few point and shoot waterproof cameras with video image stabilization.
My only complaint is battery life. I am getting 30-40 minutes per battery when they are advertised as 75 minutes.
I like to leave the video camera running while sturgeon fishing (to catch the bite and hookset) and changing batteries every 30 minutes is not acceptable.
-
so will the Fujifilm Finepix XP10 Waterproof Digital Camera do the job?
-
I've had two of those Finepix and wouldn't reccomend them if you are a clumsy oaf like myself as the both bit the dust after fairly minor scrapes. I wasn't that impressed with the pictures, but they are pretty cheap.

I had one. It took mediocre pics until it crushed cracking the lens while in my pocket. I didn't even bruise. Not so tough IMO. I now have a Canon D10 which takes better pictures and is more durable it appears. Its a bit bulky, but this makes it easier to grip when using the camera as a fish-bonker.
-
I would look at the Lumix LX2

I have this one.
My complaints are: Xd card is not compatible with most card readers, it's not sand proof, and the stupid thing is camo so i forget it on the forest floor all the time!
what i like: pretty much indestructible (except if you get sand in it), lots of shooting modes (a plus and a minus - you really need to know which mode to use) and the price point was great ($200 on boxing day last year)

Stylus Tough 3000 uses a standard SDHC card and are not camo. I also don't see how you will get sand in it unless you have opened a hatch.
Not sure which camera you are talking about...
-
must be the model before that, mine is XD
the sand gets in the shutter cover.

I agree, that XD card is a little frustrating searching for a port that will accept in on special computers.
-
Arrgh, and i just lost the usb cable for it! :'(
anyone who has an extra one, i'll trade you for some custom tied flies or something!
(the USB cable that comes with the camera)
It's very inconvenient always having to find a card reader.

i have the olympus 6020, was working great in and out of the water but now it is at the shop being repaired after the shutter wouldn't open when it was powered on. the options it has are great and takes decent pictures for a point and shoot, and so much easier to take it to the river than my canon DSLR.

you can buy the usb cable at the dollar store.

I stand corrected. That is definitely camo.
If you check the futureshop site the new model is Stylus Tough 3005 and it is identical to my older Stylus Tough 3000. Both are SDHC

no way! the actual cable!?!?
i checked at dollarama and dollar giant.
i bought the card reader from dollarama but it wasn't compatible. the best i found was a 16.00 reader from walmart. the port is misaligned, but it does the trick for now. i can only imagine the damage that is happening to my card from the port misalignment.

Olympus stylus 850................. Have used it in the rain /used it in winter at at least -8 c and it has fallen of a Ford Ranger fender onto a logging road while driving (http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r79/Spoonman_05/PA090178.jpg) (http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r79/Spoonman_05/P3020020.jpg) (http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r79/Spoonman_05/P4260093.jpg) (http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r79/Spoonman_05/P4260091.jpg) (http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r79/Spoonman_05/P4260090.jpg) http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r79/Spoonman_05/?action=view¤t=2010steelhead.mp4 http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r79/Spoonman_05/?action=view¤t=cutversion.mp4

I did quite a bit of research on this because I, probably like a lot of you, use my camera outdoors a lot and I've had problems in the past with a camera shutting down when the air gets too wet. Also generally I wanted a durable camera. What I found was that the best reviewed waterproof camera was the Sony TX5. So I got one for myself as a Christmas present ;)
Info from the Sony site: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666122654

It is waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, and freezeproof. 10.2 mpx. And with zoomable HD video. So far so good. I tested it by filling my sink and dropping it in, turning it on, filming an HD video and then leaving it on with the lens cover open for about an hour under water. Took it out dried it off and then let it air dry the rest, and no problem.
You can find a point and click waterproof camera for less money, but I figured I might as well get the best reviewed one now or be sorry later. The picture quality is great. It is all touch screen menus, which can be good or bad depending. A con is the battery life. And they're not cheap. But once you've invested in a backup battery and a memory card you shouldn't have to spend again for awhile. Another con might be the size. Its a little small and has a slippery finish to hang onto, although I haven't had a problem with that and I like that fits into a pocket or a belt case easily. Also I have heard that in spite of its overall toughness, the paint chips off easily, so you should look for a silver finish if your clumsy and/or don't want it to look like crap after a few years. But I can overlook those cons because of the durability and shot quality.
I'll try and post some photos sometime.
