Title: Coho & steelhead "lifestyles"
Post by: Kenwee on December 21, 2010, 08:25:39 PM
Do steelhead hold in similar waters as coho? Do they have similar characteristics? I believe both species hold in similar waters like riffles, tail outs and so on. Any information and knowledge shared will be appreciated.

Coho seem to like frog water althogh I have caught them in all different types of water. They would be in all the spots you find the big stupid Stinkies if...they weren't so spooked by them.

Also I like to fish roe for Coho but find its not neccesary for steelhead, thank God because your hands sometimes freeze in the cold weather using bait. Sand shrimp aka bugs are a primo bait for the steelies.

they'll hold where you think they'd hold.. but i think what's more important is to adjust your gear so you're getting down to where the fish are (would be) so they can actually see it.

steels sit in faster rippled runs, or in pockets and seams.( i find it works the best to start at the bottom of a big strech of rapids, and fish all the pockets, runs and seams. This is how i catch most of mine.)
but again if the water looks appeling throw some casts in there and remember to short float!Dont be afraid to cast within a foot of the far shore either. :)

Fish all water dont pass by anything. Pick a section to fish, fish it hard move and fish the next section the same. Dont skip anything.

coho prefer the least amount of current, frog water is classic coho hot spots. ofcourse u can catch them in faster water but those are usually moving fish,
Steelhead prefer, walking speed water on classic rivers, but on rivers like the vedder they can hold anywhere.

Whats a classic river?  I have never heard this term before.

Maybe he meant "classy river" since he excluded Vedder from this category  :D
