The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, on Friday, officially took over the regulation of coastal aquaculture with the signing of an agreement between the federal and provincial governments some 20 months after a B.C. Supreme Court ruling determined it should be a federal responsibility.

Fisheries Minister Gail Shea, speaking at the Vancouver Aquarium, said the DFO will take over the regulation of farms and enforcement of rules, establishing new locations and bringing new fisheries officers on staff to handle the duties.

Shea said the province will retain responsibilities, as the lead agency for Crown land leasing, for decisions on siting farms.
