Do you guys prefer up-locking or down-locking and why?
-
Uplocking. I prefer to feel cork under my hand rather than a reel seat ;) Opposite direction, that is downlocking, on a level wind rod for the same reason.
-
Uplocking for a pin rod, for the same reasons dave just mentioned. Made a couple casts before with a friends rod with a downlocking seat and it drove me nuts, just wasn't right.
-
depends how you hold your reel....the downlocking is for the old style of fishing a pin

W-footing, best of both worlds...

Nice Campbell reel, looks line mine but different color.

I have a 3113, factory built, rod. It’s the only pin rod I have used. The reel position for me is to close to the but of the rod. I think, I would like, to have the reel position up the handle a bit more. A guy Gould hold the rod under his arm, as appose to holding the rod out in front of you.
Should a guy sell the rod and buy, Lamiglas, or Loomis? Or have the reel seat change? What is up-locking and down locking on a pin rod?
-
??? ...if you are talking about KP's first pic it's not a Campbell!
Hey kingpin, nice kingfisher ;)
-
haha, I guess mine is a copy. looks the identical but with less porting on the spool. Here is a pic of a up lock reel seat and the reel. Im not to happy with the reel seat. The person that built the rod took it upon themselves to use a fly reel seat because they did not have the one I asked for in stock. I had to have the reel machined down to fit the rod.

thanks guys. Kingpin, can you explain what the old-style of fishing a pin is? it was long before my time i guess... thanks in advance
-
The cork work on those reel seats is very good, especially picture #2 with the 2 sliding rings. kingpin, whoever built that should get some serious credit.
-
oliver rustchmann did both rods....i wont give his number out but you can email him at swiftwater@shaw.ca

Thanks. As a rodbuilder I appreciate this man's skill.
-
I just got my new rod yesterday, its sweet. Oliver has built 2 rods for me so far, and he by far does the cleanest looking job out there. Both are deadly.
-
thanks for the input fellas, i really appreciate it. Looks like it'll be up-locking for me. Now I gotta find a good builder.. ChromeKings who built your rod?
