im going to look a used sage rod and islander centerpin combo. i know what to look for on the rod, but the centerpin i have no clue. what are the signs i should be looking for and sounds from the reel. as ive only fished with a centerpin once. any info would be much appreciated thanks.

not much to look for on the cp reel.
check the center fixing screw to make sure it's not stripped or damaged. It's a low torque screw and can be damaged by overtightening on some models.
check the bearings for wobble, you can feel worn/damaged bearings when you spin up the reel
look for obvious signs of damage (scratches, corrosion, dings in the reel palming edge)
check the clicker to see that it works and can be turned on and off
spin it up and grin like a fool.
if the retrieve is the wrong hand, you can re-spool them, but it may be worth your while to do it at a shop where they have a line winder. Otherwise tie an end off to a tree and take it for a LONG walk, stacking the line up on the ground as you go. Consider re-rigging your mainline in the opposite direction to even out the wear etc if you're respooling.

Hey Brian, how can you check for bearing wobble..??
-
i am no expert but if the reel has a slight wobble when free spinning

So how can you identify the wobble is from the bent spindle, worn spindle ,bearings or from the spool itself ??
-
hey Salmonlover,if you dont find nothing i have a sage 3113m,and a gold islander in good condition with waranty and case and pouch for the reel,we can work out a deal if you wanna take a look at it.
Cheers ;D

I really have no idea, I have two center pins and they are both very old basically as simple as a reel can get, and it would be obvious is something is wrong with it. The one in my display picture has a very very slight wobble when she spins, and of course when you reel it but it's very very minor and the reel works just fine but it's on bushings so it can probably take more abuse.

A little wobble is OK but check for loose play (without it spinning)
Most Scratches are cosmetic; any used reel will have them.
Look for damage (cracks or bigger chips) on the spool and rim.
A lot of light damage on a reel won't really affect its performance but can be used when you're determining the price.
Do yourself a favour and go to a store that sells Islanders,
Check how a new one performs (the spin, the play) so you have something to compare to, (besides a picture and the words you're reading now)
Ask how much for a tune-up.
ask how much to replace worn bearings. So you can determine the additional costs the reel might cost you
and figure that into the cost of the reel
Good luck

Yes that is the best advice and most obvious, check out a brand new reel in the same model and compare this used on to that.
I cannot afford a brand new islander so that's why I have two vintage centre pin reels that i'm using as I was able to get them at great (and somewhat inexpensive) prices on ebay from the UK.

older classic reels are way nicer anyways and can usually take alot more of a beating then some of the newer ones. While Islanders are nice and shiny you will be pi**ed if you scratch it :'(
there is definately some nice reels out there you can look at besides Islanders, some available locally and some not.

If the spindle is best it is going to show obvious signs of damage on the spool from being dropped or hit.
-
salmonlover - if you want a decent setup check out the one i posted in the Classifieds, will be alot cheaper than a Sage/Islander setup for sure and isnt to far off for performance either ;D and yes i have fished both

Anto, getting a different set up? or just tired of the pin? I usually grab my 11 bearing Calais. I'm getting old and need a nap and have a sore back after fishing the pin all day...lol
Shoot me an email, we've chatted before on another site.

rod and reel are like brand new. the problem isnt checking what to look for on a used centerpin. its learning to cast good distances ???

Hard to go wrong with any of the older model Silex reels ...not talking about the the one simply called the "Silex" (i970's on) which are OK as well. I'm talking about the Super, Jewel, Major, or the Superba. Got my Superba back in the 1964 for Christmas when I was 9. The old man never let me forget he spent $25 on it which I guess was a fair bit to put out on a reel back then.
Although I do fly fish a lot on the rivers I've fished that reel hard for over 45 years and expect it to last me for the rest of my life..... and if it doesn't I have a brand new one I picked up a few years back (samre Model) still in the Hardy box that has yet to see the water just in case DISASTER STRIKES.

Is there any way to find what type of bearing installed on the reel ? For example on Islander - ABEC 3 or factory ungraded ABEC 7
