Last night I had to attend the Upper Fraser Valley Sport Fishing Advisory Committee fall meeting, so it only made sense to make a half-day fishing trip out of it.
From what others have reported, it seems like fishing is winding down on the Vedder. Because the river rose a couple of feet late last week, it was likely most of the fresher fish had moved to the upper sections of the river. I decided to focus my afternoon's effort in mid river.
I met up with a couple others who had already been on the flow since first light. Itosh reported very little success in the lower river but some improvement at a spot in mid river. I arrived to find him with a coho jack on the river bank.
Because they had been fishing the spot for quite awhile, I suggested that we walk to a spot slightly further upstream where I have caught fish in the past. We walked up and found the prime piece of water unoccupied. It looked extremely fishy so I wasted no time to float a piece of roe through it.
There were a couple of misses first, which I thought were snags. I shortened the float depth slightly, put on a fresh piece of roe. With one cast, the float dove just after it started drifting. A coho salmon exploded on the surface once I set the hook. I guided it into the shallow bay but struggled to beach it for awhile once I saw the absence of the adipose fin. The 10lb or so doe was eventually slid onto the bank and I finally have a hatchery marked coho salmon in the bag.

The fishing only got better. Once I bled my catch and resumed fishing, I proceeded to hook another one on the next cast. It was another big coho salmon, but the hook popped out this time within seconds. The others also connected with their shares of adult coho salmon, but they all came off the hook.
There were also chum salmon in the pool and a few also liked our roe. These were of course carefully released after each brief battle.

We spent about two hours at the first spot until the fishing gradually died off. With a couple more jacks landed by Itosh, there were no other coho salmon caught so it was time to make a move.
Our second and last spot of the day was flowing slightly faster, so it was difficult to say if we would encounter any fish. We fished along the shallows, hoping to connect with coho salmon that might move through.
There were indeed coho. It did not take long for me to hook one, but it was the wrong colour. It is not unusual to come across fish that are much coloured in November.
Here Itosh caught me handling a boot, away from the river bank of course.

The action did not end there. I had the float depth set at 2ft and the bites kept on coming. The next fish was much better, a silver wild coho that was around 4 or 5lb. It looked kind of flossed. :o

Itosh continued to catch his share of jacks. ;D We landed a few more fish and also missed a few more bites before we walked back to our cars in darkness.
This is a peaceful time to be fishing on the Vedder, with the odd nice fish mixed in between. This was the most enjoyable trip for me so far this season. :)

Nice job Rodney! I was out Sunday and the only two I caught had the same coloring as your fourth photo - one wild and one hatchery - both released of course. It was quiet (not so many people) in the areas that I fished.

Great report...I guess one more trip out wouldnt hurt lol. Tomorrow it will be, time to defrost some roe
-
That second picture is awesome.

That second picture is awesome.
Would you like to buy a framed copy of it? I'll give you a good deal. ;D ;D ;D
-
Nice pictures...I like the last one the best...is that a sickle style hook your using?
I use them on my spinners and lures but never tried them float fishing with roe.
-
Great report. Thanks Rodney.
I keep thinking I am going to quit the Vedder but the fishing seems to have kept going there longer than I would have expected. Going to head up there on Thursday - its just too bad I don't have any roe left. I will have to try spoons and hope for the best with any coho that might be left there.
-
The hook is just a steelhead hook actually, size one.
I only used my spoon very briefly as most spots we fished were rather fast and made lure casting a bit difficult.
-
Good job, Rod!
You roe chucker, you! :D
My pro-cured roe turned out fantastic - can't wait to test it in January! ;D
-
Yep, I did not need to beg you for roe after all. ;D I have two big skeins of roe that will sit in a brine later today and hopefully a small cluster of those eggs will produce a steelhead for me, I can only hope/wish. ;D
-
Are you TOW ing now? ;D ;D ;D
Actually over the years I have hooked fish there a time or two. :o

Desperate time requires desperate measures. ;D

i am just thinking......is it possible to get the gps co-ordinates on your spot ;D
great photos ;D

Impressive fish + coho roe is pretty good for steelhead, or so I hear.
My last two times out, most recently Saturday, I haven't had a sniff.

Great report Rod! I was out as well on the 8th for a birthday fish and enjoyed some action from the ho's :D This was the one I took home, which ended up being my largest to date at 31"

Sights like this is motivation to go tomorrow for sure. I fished the upper Saturday. But going to focus on mid to lower instead. Maybe a short stop by the canal at the end if I have time
-
That's even nicer than the one I kept! :) Excellent catch!

Nice fish, nice reel, nice going, I am on my way shortly. ;D ;D ;D

Hue-Nut, What kind of line are you using on your Islander?

15# P Line Hydro Float, with about 5 feet of 12# Seaguar Flouro nail knotted on there. The line is a spectra fiber with floating coating, so there is no stretch and a nice drag free drift.

Chrome...I am just finishing building a Sage VT2 1384 8w 13'8 8w 4 piece...blue blank with royal blue/gold wraps. It was tied and has a handle for a center pin. I'm considering selling it immidiately, email me if you are interested.
Thanks

Hue-Nut, did you get a scale on that beauty by any chance? Looks like she's around 10lbs or so ;D
-
go for the 13ft 3power. i got one and love it.
-
Thanks Gooey but I'm really particular about the components and styling I want on my rods. I have a short list that I'm interested in and since GLoomis no longer offer blanks, the GLX STR1563 is one on my list.
Chrome, I've got the 13' which is fricking money! My other rod is a Sage 3106 and it does not see too much action anymore. I hear ya about the sliding rings, I nearly lost a beauty when my reel fell off and I ended up having to strip the fish in. (I have the sliding rings figured out now and cinched on there good) I do think that it would be tough though to have a fixed reel seat because you may have to adjust the reel position depending on the weight that you're gonna throw. A 20g float is actually quite heavy to toss, I am using a Raven balsa 16g and its about perfect for my liking. Also the rod is unbelievably light which is tight cause I had a 12'6" that was so tip heavy I shied away from ever using it.

nah don't have one but my largest hoe to the beach by length and my eye
-
I use a 13'(4-10lbs) float rod with sliding rings(taped down) for steelhead and the length is sweet for control but I know the GLX is definitely a step up.
The control is great but hooksets even better, miss so many fish when I bring the 10'6" out. I was lucky enough to pick the rod up on ebay for $350, from a steelheader in NY, used once with the price tag still on it.

Mine is a Sage 3113 M brown blank custom built.
3106 L sounds good to me ;-) lol
edit - your rod is also a pin rod isn't it ? Guess I need to pay attention more at 1am when I'm reading. I'm looking for a baitcaster Sage for trade actually as I'm done with pinning
