Title: vanila scent
Post by: Gooey on October 27, 2010, 02:21:52 PM
I fished with a US based steelhead guide last fall.  He put pure vanila powder on his shrimp and eggs.  he said salmon love it too.  Anyone have luck with vanila scent?  the steelhead certainly liked it.

I have a big bag of double redd/vanilla spring roe...think I may carry some without the scent tomorrow just in case?!?

The vanilla scent probably masks human scent, like anise oil.

It does work especially for steelies.  Remember, steelhead do like sweet flavors, salmon seem to prefer chemicals (sulfites, etc). Who here has cured roe with Cherry or Raspbery Jello and had good success?  I've soaked non scented Jensen eggs in pure vanilla and have had success.  Was it the vanilla? Or just the Jensens?  Who knows. But I do like the smell of vanilla over anise.

I used Pro Cure Special Process Florescent Flame mixed with Peach Jello Powder 3:1 ratio to cure up some roe. It worked amazing and held its color really well for a long time. Fish love it, I also did some with Strawberry and it was just as good too. :) Never tried Vanilla before, but I like to experiment with all kinds of stuff, you never know when your going to make a batch of "Wonder Bait" ;D

Well, I can confirm that coho don't dislike vanilla!   ;)

Yesterday was one of those days were everything worked though.  I hit coho on vanila plus DRH Procure, straight DRH Procure, jigs, and blades.  I dont think the Vanila roe outfished the non scented roe and my budy hit fish on both types too.  Was the best day of coho fishing I have seen in a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time.  Big fish too - 8-14lbs (most around 9-10lbs).
