Many of you who frequently shop at Nikka Fishing and Marine would know Calvin Higano, who sadly passed away on Tuesday after battling cancer since last year.

I just heard that Calvin Higano passed away very recently. For those that have not heard of him, he worked at Nikka for most of his life. He was truly a great sportsman, a top rod in both freshwater and salt and a great hunter. He was a part time fishing guide and was requested by many famous people to be their guide. He was always patient and helpful whenever I was at the store, giving me advice which I use on the rivers to this day. I send my condolences to his family.

This is very sad news. His parents are friends of the family, I used to stay at their cabin in pender harbour as a kid. Great family, very sorry for their loss.

I grew up in Steveston and Calvin was always there to show me the way from catching shiners on "C" dock as a 10 year old and in later years he shared his wealth of knowledge in my pursuit of salmon.
His passing is a great loss to the local fishing community.
RIP Cal, you will be missed! :-[

Such sad news.
Calvin was very passionate about fishing and hunting. He always gave the best advice about fishing and there was usually people eager to talk to him. Whenever I spoke to him in the store I left wanting to go fishing right now.

The "Big Guy" upstairs sure is greedy, he always seems to take the truly good ones away from us. A very sad time indeed. My prayers go out to his family. I will miss you Calvin :( :'(

Even though he probably didn't remember me, I'm thankful that I got to shake his hand.

I lived and worked in Steveston for a few years. Visits to Calvin at Nikka while I was supposed to be working was a guilty pleasure I indulged at least once a week. We had something in common besides fishing: both of our parents owned property in Pender Harbour. Sadly after I moved away from Steveston I lost track of Calvin.
I had heard from the staff at Nikka a while back that Calvin was not well and was taking a break from the shop. I had hoped that our paths would cross again.
I was thinking of him recently. I was saddened when I googled his name, and saw two dates seperated by a hyphen on this web site. I know what that means.
I will really miss BS'ing with Calvin. Our chats were always inspiring.
