Title: Taking a young kid fishing this time of the year...
Post by: CohoMan on September 30, 2010, 07:22:00 PM
I was fishing yesterday and I noticed a young lad( ~18 ) on the otherside with a yound kid( no pfd on him ) of about 3.

They were about 12 fishermen standing in the water and this kid was walking behind these fishermen casting.  Some had long long leaders ( looks like leftover from the sockeye season ).

I cringed everytime the kid walked behind them. Every once in awhile, the little boy would walk into the water playing and I cringed more.

The yound lad that took the boy fishing paid no attention at all. I was thinking what would happen if the little boy would accidentally fall into the faster water?

I just could not stand watching it!!!!!!

I find it tough to watch a father take his young son fishing from the top of the rocks at cable pool. I saw a kid no more than 11 up there earlier this week with his old man that didn't look overly "river savvy". Not a good scene if the kid gets excited with a fish on (which I saw him with in the few minutes I watched) and stumbles too close to the edge.

Both my buddy and I could not believe what we were seeing.....absolutely no concern about what would happen if he falls in or get hooked by someone.

3 years old is too young to take him fishing in my opinion. Accidents can happen in a split second

3 year old? I hear news about children that age drowning in bathtubs all the time, I can only imagine those numbers go up around a river. Accident just waiting to happen.
I remember when I was young, My dad would drop me off on a dead slow side channel and I would chase around spawning chum for hours, while he fished the river.

so your telling me i shouldnt bring my son fishing with me next year FA ??

i have already had him in the boat(inside playpen with pfd on) a couple times on the lake. He is ALWAYS wearing his PFD and when were at the river he is usually leashed to me so he cant go far on land or water  ;) If you think it through there is no reason why you cant bring your kids with you.

It's okay to bring your kids.  Just remember kid's more important than fishing.  You just need to keep an eye on your kids and not on your fishing.
