I've got a bunch of hooks on order hopefully arriving this week  ::) so i can start tying up some jigs...

couple questions for you Banny...

I got weighted jig heads (1/4"), they are nice as they provide some good weight to the jig however the hole in them doesn't really accept my pins very well, i have to double them up, so where do you find your beads or pins from? I was thinking about maybe getting those sewing pins that have the plastic bob on the end to put as an added feature to hold a jig bead head on.

Mine are tied on bent rods jigs do it yourself packs.  Little expensive but the components included are top notch.

Ah okay

Basically I do have enough supply to tie up 200 jigs, cost of about 30-40 dollars depending how fancy to get with the materials for the body. Sure beats 3.50 a pop,  :o, maybe i'll open a stand on the side of the river  :-

the pins i have will work fine in the bent rod beads, just normal sewing finding pins that you can get at walmart for like 2 bucks.

A few weeks ago I posted a link to a site where you can buy the same beads that are sold with the bent rods jigs.  It was on a thread related to purchasing bulk hooks for jigs.  Just run a search for my old posts.

You will want a pin with an all metal head and a heavy gauge, you do not want it to be able to bend if only the head of the jig hooks between rocks.  You also don't want any type of pin where damage can allow the bead to fall off.

Hope the hooks you purchased are a heavy enough gauge, I am interested what type they are.

I switched to using soft plastics instead.  I use walleye jigs.

Didn't notice a difference in effectiveness.  Cheap and easy.

Same ones that bent rods has, Matzuo sickle hooks in 1/0 and size 1,  although i think they use 60 degree bend where as mine are 90 degree i just noticed that, shouldn't make much of a difference as they are quite similar .

i think cigar box nails will also be an effective pin as well if you can find them in 1 1/2" length as they have a large head on them, like a mini roofing nail

Are they the heavy gauge hooks like the bent rods jigs?  Where did you find a supplier? The 90 degree makes no difference with the pin and bead style setup.

I ordered them off Ebay from a fishing supply whole saler, from what I could find Matzuo only makes the sickle hooks in one gauge, so it SHOULD be exactly the same, but I do not know for sure as I don't have them in my hands yet

Shoot, hate to say it but you are likely in for a disappointment.

The Matzuo sickle jig hooks available on the market are a thin gauge wire.  The ones used for bent rod jigs were a not a normal catalog item and I doubt they were available on Ebay.  Last Fall I spoke with a distributor of Matzuo products in the states and he could not get the heavy gauge hooks for me.

Roger that. Chartruse colored jigs.  Or Chartruse and pink.  don't forget to tip the hook with a fresh prawn. Gives a tasty smell to it.   I also like the jigs from Bent Rods.  True they are more expensive but they take a beating and last longer - Much more so than the jigs I bought at GI Joe's in the States as they went out of business. It is so exhilirating watching your float go down and then Fish On!!!

Is there a serial number on these hooks as compared to the thicker gauged one? Or is there some sort of monopoly going on in the jig hook world?

Hopefully they come this week sometime I can know for sure, I will put them to a bend test

From everything I have seen and heard the heavy gauge ones are simply not available other than a high volume custom order directly from the factory.  The hooks commonly available are meant for bass/walleye applications I guess.  There are some other options from Owner and Gamakatsu but they are fairly expensive.

I was gong to exchange the hooks that came with my blades for better quality one i use for fishing roe, but the did not seem long enough.....
The hook should overhang the blade itself right?

How do you find those 2x owner jig hooks to be? i've never actually seen them

Have never used them either, after failing to find the heavy Matzuo hooks last year I looked at the other hooks and decided to just stick with the jig packs from bent rods as the prices once factoring in the pins and beads were not that much different.

Well if my hooks don't come tomorrow I was planning to buy a bent rods pack anyways as I'm down to a single jig and I would like to have a few available for the weekend,  maybe if we get a group to go in on a bulk order on jig supply, we can get a deal?

This is probably the best deal going at the moment.  Just paint the heads in whatever color you want.

I'm using jigs with Owner 1/0 hooks. Really sharp but not so strong. It takes time to play big chums.

The plastic bob will break off and you will lose your bead.
I use these in 1":

You can find them cheaper at Wal-Mart in the picture hanging section for those inclined.

Thank for the pin idea my friend.

I got the hooks today.. yes you were correct oh wise banny.... cheap thin metal, would be just fine for smaller fish but as soon as you get into the bigger boys...it's gonna be dicey. I'm going to tie up a few testers and see what happens. Someone want to point me in the direction to where I can order gammy jig hooks online? I don't trust owner enough to spend some coin on their hooks without seeing a product first.

Its either that or go to your local tackle shop and purchase a 25 pack for $30.  Even with $15 shipping its 40$ for 50 that way.

it's all a monopoly i tell you.....it's these tackle suppliers hyping up jigs to us fishermen then driving up the prices on the hooks....one big ugly scheme

As far as I know RVRFSHR sells to Rod exclusively so he will only sell small quantities to Canadians.
Here are my sources:
I have had success catching steel and chum using these hooks from First Bite:

http://pnwws.com/cgi-bin/firstbitejigs/store/store.pl?product=cat20&cart_id=4617282.3427

with these weights (not this exact supplier, but similar)

and the brass pins. I am tying jigs for a few friends as well (now they tie their own:))
I also buy BentRod kits from SeaRun. It's certainly convenient.

pink and purples are good.
My favorite is flesh colour. Tie a few in that colour and you'll be happy you did

While I cannot comment on their jig hooks, I will say I prefer owner to gamikatsu (octopus hooks) for fishing bait. I used to buy gammys all the time. I noticed I was losing a lot of hooked fish as well as the hooks were dulling quick after a couple hookups or snags. I switched to owner cutting points and have noticed a big difference for me personally. Seem to stay sharper and have hardly lost any hooked fish.

reason most dont use Owners is because they are like 80 cents a hook !! I use them for fishing tube flies and intruders but Gammies for everything else and havent noticed any fish landing difference.

I bought some of the Gamakatsu 2x heavy jig hooks online. They are also strong enough for chum/steelhead, however you can only order them from a US credit card.

Was out today and watched a buddy lose 6 chum do to hooks bending out off the shop bought jigs.... got sick of em a few years ago. For chum i now buy small cod jigs and paint em and spider thread on some marabou.. only really good for chum tho..
