I always thought the tide was about 4 hours after Point Atkinson.

The water can rise up a foot or more depending upon the water levels.  A few years ago before I knew that the tide could affect the canal, a buddy and I waded to a sandbar under the highway bridge.  Wading in, the water was just above waist high.  A few hours later, the tide came in.  Wading out, the water was up to our necks.  Filled our waders full of water and ruined a digital camera.  Luckily current was really slow. But it still freaked me out.  Now, I always check the tide tables if I plan on fishing the canal.

Wow!  That's pretty crazy.  I didn't realize tides went so far up the Fraser to effect the canal.  Sure you lost a camera, but it could have been moch worse.
