Has anyone checked out the river recently? How's the lack of parking situation on the west side affecting things?
Thanks.
-
I would definitely be interested to see how that pans out too.
I suspect you will be OK this month but, once the chum run starts in earnest in October, I expect the parking situation will be a nightmare. Only made worse by the fact that everybody will be forced onto the East side of the river - it really too bad ???
-
nothing yet, honest
Im guessing people will go back to fishing the mouth area
-
why is there a lack of parking?

i was there last week water clarity was reall good u can basically see the bottom of the toilet bowl...i was fly fishing there and had some hits but kept missin my hook set....did land a nice cutty but yeah that east side area is gonna be the biggest gong show!
-
The Stave always runs gin clear, have never seen it any other way. Asking how the water is seems kinda pointless.. Go fishing.....
-
the coho are showing up saw one in the spawning channel
-
anybody been to the stave latly have the week off and i want to see if i cant catch a decently clean chum for some roe... herd of chum already in vedder so im wondering if there in the stave too? is it worth fishing sometime this week?
-
Some came in over night ... and coho showed up this morning in big numbers was crazy at first light never seen so many ho's in the stave so early before .. not too many chums tho only jumpin in a few spots..
-
thats great news this years run might be good one

I agree buds, maybe change the topic title to 2010 Stave River chum conditions?!?!?
-
Park gates opens up at 9am. Room for about 50 vehicles. Early birds generally park near the entrance on the side of the road - albeit there is not much room for that - the vehicles are half on the road. I forecast that we'll see 'No Parking' signs there as well in the near future.
I wonder if Translink would consider a Community Shuttle service? ;D They would probably even make money on that run! ;D
The only water condition anyone has to consider is the tide levels and when extra water is released from the dam.
Otherwise, as Daumzilla stated:
The Stave always runs gin clear

Was out there today fished the east bank its getting busy nobody caught anything while i was there ended up foul hooking a large male chum thats about it, had reports that the ruskin place trailer park area is fishing really good No tresspassing for me though.
-
What were the water levels like? I'm heading there tomorrow AM.
-
was fishing the stave today there was at least a couple of dozen people fishing buddy landed a male chum released few others got into some but broke off not bad of a day!!!
-

was the chum chrome or sporting its spawning colours.
-
did very well today there for fresh cohos, lots of big fresh fish, and some jacks finally to round things out.
The chum seem to be scarce and booty though and Im guessing the dam is still flowing though I didnt see it up close.

The chum was sporting its spawning colors already back it went.
-
i find if you short float one to two feet below the surface you almost always hook up with the fresher chum salmon in the system as they will actually be more energetic to make a strike on your offering, where as the people fishing nearer the bottom end up with more boots and more snagged fish

Boat or shore, Leadbelly?
-
not been there in a boat yet this season.wishI could go today
-
Was out there for a few hours today, I was short floating with roe, got skunked.
Not that there weren't plenty of chum being brought in, (by their tail, back, fins).
Didn't see or hear of any coho.
-
Hit the Stave today and conditions were decent. Didn't see any Coho or Springs taken. Chum everywhere. Saw one guy flossing out chum left, right and centre. He even bonked a foul hooked fish. >:(
-
I was there on the 20th, and I did rather well. Landed 7 in 4 hours.
Short floating a bent rod style jig.
I didn't see any coho or springs tho, but lot of ppl hooking chum
-
I spent the last two Fridays there. The amount of fish in the river two weeks ago was down from normal. Last Friday about 60% of normal. My buddy and I landed 20 two weeks ago and 35 this last Friday and only one white belly in the whole lot. Pretty shabby if you ask me. Oh well, it's closed now. As for springs and coho; saw some jack coho and one spring.
-
are the crowds still crazy their with the chum being closed now?
-
I was there yesterday. The toilet bowl looked like the pictures I saw from peg leg this summer.Everyone and their dog, flossing to beat the band. I was on the other side and short floated a cerise jig and got more fish than the flossers that were beside me ;D It was an eye opener to say the least, and confirms that I made the right decision, when I went trout fishing this summer instead of partaking in the "show". I never want to be around that many people fishing again. I was almost head hooked about 4 times by one individual, and the last time he casted over me I grabbed his line off mine , took my clippers, cut his betty and 7/0 hook ::), looked him straight in the eye and when he went to put out his hand to grab it from me, I dropped it at his feet and walked away. ;D He couldn't speak "engrish", so there was no talking ;D
Tons of fish everywhere though, I did see some coho down by the bridge, but mostly boots and half arsed dogs. I managed a couple of decent doe's for the smoker though, plus some very nice skeins as well, not chrome silver brights, but pretty good shape and still very solid/firm.
-
I wonder what the steelhead run is gonna be like this year , went out yesterday one nice cuttie on a orange egg pattern on a 5 weight flyrod. Where you find one cuttie you find many!
-
Nice report Steve; you have many fish in your future. I for one am pleased to see your optimism as opposed to the pessimism displayed by so many others.
-
Stave River's steelhead stock is entirely hatchery supplemented. Ten pairs (not entirely sure, as the number is just off the top of my head) of brood fish are collected to produce the stock, so one should not expect a big return compared to what other larger systems may receive.
Here's more information.

Stave was decent today. Water vis. was 6 ft plus, which is more than I can say for the Vedder right now.
Lots of dogs, but no coho being caught that I saw.
-
anybody been out to this system recently? Should be some steelhead pushing in soon but finding them is a task and half gonna try drifting some snakes maybe a couple of blades or two come the start of december with all this rain we've been having some might be coming in early
-
Looked great yesterday, but we hit a bunch of rainfall in Chilliwack, so I cant say anymore.
