Title: hooks
Post by: devon42 on September 03, 2010, 12:06:29 PM
im sure this has been asked many times before but i tried using the search thing but i couldnt find what people are using so i decided to make a poll
i usually use size 2 for all my vedder fishing but they seem really small and iv yet to hook a big spring with one just wondering if it can handle a big spring
ive no problem hooking huge ugly chum with size 2 so i wanna know what people are using

I use size 4 because coho are usually quite spooked and size 4 is probably going to bend if a spring grabs it.

I usually use 4's for coho when its really clear and 2's for everything the rest of the time, only ever had an issue when I used red gammies, they broke at the end of the shank, switched brands and the problem went away

#1's seem to be good all around, I haven't had a problem with em.

#1 or 2 with roe, #1/0 with prawns.  Gammies.

#1/0 or #2/0 on my blades and spinners.....used to use the DNE siwash until yesterday.  Lost a small spring cuz the hook snapped at the point where the barb used to be.  I thought it was a dud or maybe i compromised the hook while pinching the barb, but did some tests on other DNE hooks straight out of the pack and same thing.  They snap with very little pressure.

Now I have to change the hooks on like 50 spinners.  arghhhh

I broke 3 DNE hooks from 3 different packs last year.  I gave all my DNE's away.  I'm not sure why I ever tried them.  Gammies have never let me down.

3/0 red gammies on ten foot leaders, is there any other way to fish?  :D

# 1 always worked for me and i dont know why bentrod and Mr.p are having problems with the dne hooks never had one break with a fish on and they are a lot cheaper . gammies are great but when your losing gear on snags its a waste of money. :o

#2 - as I'm not targeting springs.

Pretty much what everyone else posted,

#2's with a wool tie
#1's with roe
#1/0 with prawns or big roe gobs in dirty water

Last year I switched from gamakatsu hooks to owner cutting points and have been happy with the switch. I was losing hooked fish and seem to keep them on better with the owners. Maybe just a coinsidence, who knows.

I don't ever use wool but I agree with the rest.

The whole small hooks and long leaders for spooky fish is a load of tripe.

I use a 1/0 with an egg loop to attach yarn for everything on the vedder.
