Heading up to the Skagit on Thursday.  Anyone have a report on water level and what might be the best fly fishing tactics and flies to use?

water levels are low enough to wade most tail outs. its been very busy but there is trout to be had...small pheasant tails in brown and black have been good under an indicator. lots of fish feeding on the surface, yesterday there was a good caddis hatch going on.

was there yesterday for the first time. What a beauty river! Fished the lower portion. The  river is crossable and clear. I did not see many risers at all in the sections i fished.I did fish dry flies too but no luck. Did manage a few bull trout with a white streamer.

fished the upper skagit and sumallo, water level was low and easy to get around.  it was busy, saw guys on the trail constantly.  i fished dry flies and landed 3 rainbows all over 13 inches, and a few small 6 inchers.

I was up again today for the 8th time this year. The river is in PRIME condition!!!!!!

Flies that worked today were;

-Prince Nymph
-Small StoneFlies
-Flashback Pheasent tails

-BWO
-Para Adams
-Small elk hair caddis

Have fun, It's a wonderful place!!!!

Hi Rick.
I learn a lot from your blog and website. Thanks for sharing the effective flies.
I had no success with dry fly or nymphs. I was fishing it in all water types.I am new to fly fishing so that is most likely why i had no success. Do you think you could share how to read water you would fish with drys and nymphs?
i cant wait to go back again. my new favorite place!

I have to agree that the Skagit is a fantastic place, just enjoying the river and valley is reason enough to go up there.  Unfortunately had a water line into my place go Wed. night so Thursday was a wash out >:(.  Will try to get up this week.

how does one get directions to skagit and find a spot to throw flies at some fish,any help would b greatly appreciated.thanxs

take exit 168 off hwy 1 to flood hope road.
Turn south on silver skagit road.
You will drive for a while on the gravel
Once you see the provincial park boundary sign "Skagit Valley Provincial Park" you will soon cross a bridge at the 26 mile mark at Silver Tip campground and day use area. The Skagit river will intermittently intersect the road from this point all the way to Ross lake. Pull over and fish where ever you like. There are a few main spots, Rhododendron, Strawberry Flats and Chittenden day use areas. Have fun exploring. ;)

anyone fish the skagit in late september/ early october? just wanted to know if a different technique is in order this time of year. Is dry fly still a good option?
