The noon news on Global said that they have found the boat but that was all so far. A very unfortunate incident, whatever the cause.

Where did they locate the boat? Open waters or beached? How long are lifejackets able to keep a person afloat? It's to bad a good time had to turn out bad.

they said 6 miles offshore.its not how long the lifejacket keeps you floating its how long you can survive in 10c water.

yes I figured that. But I was woundering if they capsized off shore how long could the life jackets keep there bodies afloat?

all the life jackets were found on the boat,so without floatation in that water even a good swimmer wont last long. a good lifejacket would keep you floating even after death.

Just returned from Kyuiquot sound fishing with David Murphy sportfishing charter last Thursday. Witnessed the Chinook helicopter and 2 search planes flying thier search grid over head of us on the south side of Brooks Penninsula. Saw the Coast Guard ship doing their search on the water. That day there was a Gale Force wind warning 30-40 knots from the NW. Why would they go out in such extreme conditions? It was still very lumpy for us where we fished. Most of the lodges provide full surival suits to wear and on warm days I notice that none of the guests on the many charter boats don't wear a PFD. We wore ours only because of the winds and ocean spray, otherwise the suits would be in the cuddy.

Feel very badly as Gwyn and I were there for 9 days 2 weeks ago and would have talked to the guide I am sure during that time.
Certainly a nice place to be but one can never be careful enough when on the open water on the West Coast but freak things can happen and no matter how much experience one has, tragic things can and do happen.
Gwyn and I started to head out to open water one day but was just a little to uncomfortable for us so stayed in close, around the lighthouse and Cliff Point.
We caught all the fish we wanted there. I had planned to write the journal about the trip with pictures but feel down in the dumps at this time to do it.

why these lodges don't spend the money to buy EPIRBs for their boats is beyond me. This boat could have been found within hours.

Totally 2nd what ya just posted Andy.
EPIRBs I assume are those electronic devices that activate & send a signal to a satilite then to the CCG or whatever country...& give the distress signal & exact location of the boat.
I was watching WFN & one show said that it is LAW that any boat that goes more than 3 miles off shore has to have a EPIRB in Austraila.
Totally makes sense to me.
After this mishap hopefully we will get a law like that here as well.......definately will save alotta lives. We live in some of the most dangerous waters in the world esp. during fall & winter.

My most sincere apologies. My Friend and myself were fed erroneous information when I made the post above. I do not yet know what the motive for that was, but it certainly was not funny in any way. My error was in being a little too quick to believe what I was told, and then I furthered that by posting before I could confirm. For this I humbly apologize, especially to the Families and friends.
I have been at sea every day since and have not heard any further news than they did find the boat, rolled over and well offshore. I would appreciate it if anyone here that has any further news please fill me in. I am still holding faint hope...

No need to apologize. In situations like this people want answers as quickly as possible - whether they be the GOOD or BAD.

the boat was 6 miles offshore with anchor down,my understanding is that these guides drop down chum bags go salmon fishing then return drop anchor and jig for halibut. that would explain one reason the anchor was down ,or it could have gone down after the boat turned over.

i hope this sad situation changes the way amatuer and professional boaters deal with the west coast waters. I certainly respect the waters anywhere. I fell into the skagit ( doing something foolish ) from my pontoon boat. No life jacket ; it was on the boat but too hot to wear it.
What saved me was my arm brushed up against the steel frame as I was going under and I grabbed it. in my other hand was my rod which i did not want to lose. i managed to flipper my body up and crawl slowly back into the boat. fortunately my boat was anchored which prevented it from flipping over on top of me. that would be a disaster because there is little chance to right it while sinking without my lifejacket. now i wear that hot lifejacket every time i go out on the waters. maybe time for a s.o.s. suspenders that inflate as soon as you hit the waters.

From an eye witness report I was given yesterday, when the boat was brought in to Winter Harbour the fish that had been caught before the unfortunate incident were still on board.
We will never know what happened.
