In Maui right now and doing a little fishing with a 9wgt and a shore rod.
Haven't had any luck yet but today I got to witness a local haul in a 40-50 lb Ulua from shore. What a fight. The fish probably tore off 200 yards of line (looks like 50lb test) and a huge tuna hook. The locals fish with an octopus leg thats about a foot long.
Anyways, this fish puts on an amazing battle and is eventually landed. I will post the picture when I get back. At that point I realized I might be under powered in my arsenal and I might have to beef up my leaders!
Just added catching a Ulua onto my fishing bucket list.
This is Ulua season in Maui. I will just have to put some time in and hopefully hook into one of these bad boy. Actually at this point I will be happy to land any fish on my 9wgt!

trevally do rock; makes steelhead seem dull.
i've had success there with buzz bombs of all things.
good luck and try some lagoons if you can find some with that flyrod of yours - strip crazy fast with anything shiny..

What colour and size of buzz bomb?

2.5 inch and silver. but that is all i had. I'd toss in a 3 or 4 inch one - they are that aggressive.
but i think you could likely throw a blue fox silver spinner in their and retrieve fast - that would also work.
the key is "shiny" and stuff those trevally/ulua have not seen. I thought i snagged some coral but it was a fish - they pull that hard.
