gold rolled muddler is my go to fly for salmon.  I have caught whites, coho, and chum with it.  Haven't target reds though.

I think whats really important is to get it DOWN where they are right in front of their face.

I would just chuck roe... there are not many around to begin with, and fly fishing for them will practically be a waste of time unless you are really lucky.

Flies I would throw that I have hooked a few on before with A LOT of hours on the water, almost everyday after school (2 jacks, 1 biggin).
-Black woolly bugger (no flash)
-Black bunny leach (no flash)
-Rolled Muddlers

A puzzle for me is that the gear guys that are not chucking bait will use bright coloured wool but the fly guys often suggest dull and dark colours.   I have observed big springs in a clear pool shy away from  even a small bright piece of wool and yet go after or ignore something black.   I guess it depends on what kind of water you are fishing as the gear guys will be able to fish faster water.   Comments from those that know?
