The Nicola Valley Fish & Game Club host their Family Fishing Day event at the Kentucky-Alleyne Provicial Park, east of Merritt. Last year we had over seventy people attend and this year there are well over 100 pre-booked and confirmed.  :)

There are also many events across the Lower Mainland this coming weekend.

Saturday June 19th, Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery in Abbotsford will be hosting its family fishing day and hatchery open house. There'll be fishing available at the trout ponds for kids of all ages, starting at 8:00am. This is a great opportunity for you to take a tour around the hatchery to see where the trout you catch come from.

On the same day, Fraser Valley Salmon Society will be hosting the Greg Clark Memorial Fishing Derby at Cultus Lake. The derby starts from sun rise to early afternoon.

Also on the same day, BC Federation of Drfitfishers (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/advertiser/bcfdf/index.html) will be hosting its family fishing day at Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Contact Cam at camaronetz@hotmail.com for more info.

On Sunday June 20th, The Seymour Salmonid Society will be hosting its family fishing day at Rice Lake in North Vancouver. We'll be setting up a booth next to the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC so please feel free to come by for a chat. :)

Over 60 kids and families showed up to our Family Fishing Day Event. Over 90% caught fish and gave 50 rod and reel combos away plus other prizes. All it all it had been a tremendous success. Thank you to Bill Otway for all the help in organizing this event plus all other volunteers, including the CO team of Merritt who have been present with tips on fishing regulations, assisted with angling advice and even cleaned fish. I am looking forward to next year, but first we have to get the Angling Ambassador Event over and done with.  :D

Here are a few pictures.

By 9am we had a formidable crowd waiting for the registration booth to open.

After registration the people quickly headed to the lake to get to the best spots.

It didn't take long for the first fish to arrive at the scale. The heaviest trout weighed in at 3.5 lb the smallest at 1 lb.

A proud young angler with his catch of the day.

Some families got away from  the crowd on the shore by using a boat. Smart idea!

Our Conservation Officers were busy throughout the event giving event gores advice on regulations and fishing tactics.

Our goal for the event was simple. Get as many fish caught as possible. To that end we would do whatever we had to with advice and helping setting up gear.

I remember taking my little girls to a similar event at Garnet Valley Dam as part of ActionFest in Summerland many many years ago. A great way to get kids introduced to fishing. They caught some trout and won a prize. Dad was proud. Can't beat those memories. Awesome family fun.
