-
We understand July 16 but I have a meeting tonight where they maybe an update. I will report back to your question.
-
Was told tonight it remains a mid July opening with a slot limit.
-
Is the slot limit going to be 75cm or 29.5 inches. Or about 15 pounds for those in the know. :D
Have fun with your single barbless hook, as the drift nets go sailing by. ::)
-
Does the slot limit mean anything over the 29.5 inches or whatever they decide to make it? Or is it nothing bigger?
Justin
-
Usually nothing bigger.

Saw lots of boats out today under the Golden ears ???

June 11 - 24 hour set net fishery (Fri 7pm - 7pm); 8 hour drift net (Sat 8am-4pm)
June 25 - 24 hour set net fishery (Fri 7pm - 7pm); 8 hour drift net (Sat 8am-4pm)
A fishing plan has not been set in the area below the Port Mann Bridge but it will likely be a similar amount of time.
Notification of these fisheries will be on our internet site as the licences are issued and will be posted at: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fraserriver/firstnations/firstnationsLF_e.htm

Albion Test Fishery for chinook from April 1 to June 12, 2009, 64 adults, this season 88.
-
why do the sports fishery have a slot when other user groups dont have one, what does this do to conserve the older fish.sports have the lowest catch so this is futile.
-
Sporties does not have opening ynot. Those openings are for FN.

I guess you could ask FOC. Some F/N nets did Ok on there opening, others not so good.
-
sporties already have a slot off sooke victoria area to protect fraser river chinook and acording to mr gladden its going to happen on the fraser when it opens in july, and it will close as soon as the sockeye numbers dont look good.so pray for a good sockeye run.
-
i ment mr gadsden,in my last post.
-
Sure hope none of those chinook being taken are those so endangered Nicola stock Mr Crey was so anxious to protect.Conservation is apparently of no concern so why discrimination against the sport sector? :-\

Subject: FN0430-Recreational: Salmon - Fraser River Spring Chinook - Area 19 - Recreational Fishery Management Actions
Further to FN0387, the Department has been in consultations with
representatives of the Sport Fishing Advisory Board to develop additional
management measures in 19-6 to protect Fraser River Spring Chinook populations
as they pass through the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Fraser River during June
and early July.
Effective immediately until 23:59 hours July 15, 2010 the daily limit is two
(2) chinook salmon per day of which only one (1) chinook may be greater than 67
cm. The minimum size limit in this area is 62cm.
Variation Order No. 2010-274 dated June 11, 2010
Notes:
1. Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the Salmon Sport Head
Recovery program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped
(Hatchery Marked)chinook and coho salmon. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides
critical information for coast-wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport
Head Recovery Program at (866) 483-9994 for further information. The location
of the Head Recovery Depots can be found at the following site:
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tag-etiquette/prize-prix-eng.htm
2. Anglers are requested to release any hatchery marked sockeye. These fish
are hatchery raised sockeye and part of a recovery program designed to increase
the numbers of Cultus Lake sockeye.
The term "hatchery marked" means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the
adipose fin.
3. Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal
waters of British Columbia. This includes all species of fish in the Fraser
River.
4. Rockfish Conservation Areas that are currently in effect and are closed to
all fin fishing. Descriptions of these closures, and other recreational
fishing information, can be found on the Internet at:
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/index-eng.htm
5. Did you witness suspicious fishing activity or a violation? If so, please
call the Fisheries and Ocean Canada 24-hour toll free Observe, Record, Report
line at: (800) 465-4336.
6. For the 24 hour recorded opening and closure line, call toll free at: (866)
431-FISH.

So does DFO change its mind and open springs immediately for retension in the Fraser? Wow! :o
But is the test fishery good enough for any meaningful effort to catch a spring? ??? ;D
Need some fishing reports from the Fraser to decide if it is worth all that gas $$$ for a trip. ;D

That notice pertains to Area 19-6 as seen here:

Hey everyone, here is the in-season update on the Chinook situation. Consistent with zone 2 management as outlined in the draft IFMP the following actions will take place in the non-tidal waters of the Fraser River in Region 2:
Effective one hour before sunrise on Friday, July 16th and until one hour after sunset Thursday, July 29th, the daily limit for wild or hatchery marked chinook salmon is one (1) per day with a minimum length of 30 cm and a maximum length of 77 cm.
Effective one hour before sunrise on Friday, July 30th and until one hour after sunset Tuesday, August 31th, the daily limit for wild or hatchery marked chinook salmon is four (4) per day with only one over 50 cm.
A fishery notice will likely be released tomorrow.

Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada
Subject: FN0440-Salmon: Fraser River Spring (age 5-2) and Summer (age 5-2) Fraser Chinook: In-season prediction of returns to the Fraser River.
The potential for low spawning escapements of Spring and Summer (age 5-2)
Fraser Chinook has been identified as a potential concern for 2010. To ensure
fishery management objectives are achieved, the Department bases fishery
management actions on whether in season estimated returns are less than 30,000
(zone 1), less than 60,000 (zone 2), or greater than 60,000 (zone 3).
Management actions in each zone range from closures or fishery restrictions
(zone 1), non-retention or limited directed fisheries (zone 2), or directed
fisheries (zone 3). Pre-season planning was based on a return less than 30,000
given the potential for poor marine survival rates to have affected returns.
In season estimates of the return of Spring and Summer (age 5-2) chinook to the
Fraser River are based on the relationship between historical returns and
cumulative catch per unit effort (CPUE) at the Albion chinook test fishery for
the statistical weeks beginning in May through the second week in June. The
cumulative CPUE in 2010 is slightly higher than the previous 2 years but lower
than the historical average. Weekly point estimates of Fraser Spring and
Summer (age 5-2) chinook returns during this time period have ranged from
approximately 56,000 to 67,000 chinook.
Given the uncertainty about the in season estimated return to the Fraser River,
the Department plans to implement management actions consistent with zone 2
after July 15, 2010. Specific management actions announced previously to
protect Fraser Spring 4-2 chinook (see FN0346 and FN0347) will remain in effect
until July 15, 2010 when greater than 70% of the Spring 4-2 chinook run has
entered the Fraser. Actions for Fraser Spring and Summer (age 5-2) chinook
after July 15th will be announced in a separate fishery notice.
Did you witness suspicious fishing activity or a violation? If so, please call
the Fisheries and Ocean Canada 24-hour toll free Observe, Record, Report line
at (800) 465-4336.

Let's hope that the Albion numbers continue to grow and the run continues to be greater than what was predicted. Sounds like the weather forecast lately. Always changing.
-
Hey Chris, thanks for the update. You were specifically referring to "non-tidal waters" of the Fraser in your post; does this also apply to the tidal portion of the Fraser?

I would think so but check the FOC web site to be sure.
