So Im gonna start fly fishing again, the last time I was out with the fly rod Carter was president of the US and Trudeau was our PM.
So I was at Wholesale Sports on the weekend and saw a Pflueger Medalist combo rod and reel for $64 bucks, Im just wondering if its good enough
for getting back into things per say.

I taught myself to fly cast with a 60 dollar 5/6wt Walmart special. As long as it loads decently then it is plenty good enough to learn with.

It would probably be an okay starter. You might want to watch the sales and try out a few of the more modern rods (graphite rod have come a long way in the last 10 years). As for the reel it is a classic. I sold off 4 of them in the passed as I upgraded to more modern equipment. The stuff I bought ten years ago has already worn out, and the stuff I have bought in the last two years I don't like. I wish I kept my Medalists, like I did my old Condex reels.

The Medalist package is not a great one to start with. The rod is pretty weak and the line it comes with is junk. The reel is a classic though. You can buy a medalist reel at Wal-mart for 20 bucks and get a decent starter fly rod for well under $100. As a beginning fly caster you should make sure you have good line as it will take a fair amount of frustration out of your first few trips. It is worthwhile noting that fly line is probably the most important part of your fly fishing package. A good starter line would be something like the Scientific Angler "headstart" which can be found at some shops for around $40. I have found some half decent fly rods in the 40-100 dollar range that should be enough to get you going. This would mean that for 40 bucks more you can have a complete kit that will be good enough to last a few years at the least.

I would look at the Berrys Bait and Tackle Fathers dale sale advertisement. They have some decent starter setups and great prices.

I always thought tfo setups are great starter kits. most retail stores have them as some sort of package deal as well.
I also noticed army and navy has some kufa setups you might be interested in. but I'd recommend the tfo's...really easy to deal with warranty issues as well....unlike some other brands. good luck.
