Title: Whonnock Lake, May 15th 2010
Post by: FishOn36 on May 16, 2010, 12:58:24 PM
I was at Whonnock yesterday with a friend and his dad. Between the three of us we caught 4 crappies (3 on flies, one on a jig) none of them were bigger then 7", a 6" cutthroat and about a 13" rainbow both on flies as well. I tried trolling a wedding band and caught a whole lot of bottom. There's an abundance of crappies in that lake, which were active throughout the day constantly hitting bugs on the surface.

Those crappies are fun to catch on the fly and make a change from trout
You need a two weight though as they dont fight much :-\
They school together so once you get one stay in that area and you should do well ;)

They're definitely better than catching nothing, I was only able to catch one 6" crappie throughout the whole day LOL. Would of been nice to hook a trout but trolling doesn't seem like an ideal fishing method in that due to how shallow it is, and the abundance on Lilly pads in there to get snagged up on. I don't fly fish, but may try the noob way of doing it with a spinning rod and casting bubble if I head out there again  :D

Hi, what fly pattern were you using for crappie?

Thank you.

Just got back from Whonnock a few hours ago, was only able to get out for about 2 1/2 hours and managed to catch this little guy. There was a bunch of people fishing from canoes and pontoon boats, didn't see them catch anything, although there was people bobber fishing (probably with worms I'm guessing) catching crappies left right and center...nothing of decent size though.
