Title: Fish for the Future 2010, July 10th - FREE fishing festival!
Post by: Rodney on April 21, 2010, 02:13:47 PM
Hi all, we are now less than three months until this year's Fish for the Future (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fftf)! This year's festival will be on Saturday July 10th, from 10am until 3pm. The venue is No. 2 Road Pier at London's Landing in Steveston (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/no_2_road_pier.html).

For those of you who are unfamiliar what Fish for the Future is, it is an annual community festival that volunteers from this forum and flybc put together in Steveston. The festival includes a variety of educational activities for kids. These activities include flycasting, flytying, kids fishing on the pier with rods provided if they don't have their own equipment, an outdoor aquatic display (tanks of fish that kids catch on the day, aquatic insect displays, juvenile coho salmon), arts and crafts plus a number of exhibitors such as DFO Steveston, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, etc. The goal is to promote educated angling interest in the area by letting families try out fishing and finding out more about the Tidal Fraser ecosystem.

We once again need volunteers to take part in the following tasks: Set-up (from 8:30am to 10am), registration (writing up juvenile tidal licences), flytying demo, flycasting instruction, helping kids on the pier (setting up rods, untangling lines, baiting hooks), taking care of the aquariums (changing water, taking fish from kids to the aquariums, telling people what species of fish are in the tanks), packing up (3pm - 4pm).

If you are interested, please leave a message in this thread or send me an email at info@fishingwithrod.com. Make sure you let me know what you'd like to do as well.

Although this event is primarily hosted for kids, adults who want to learn are welcome too. ;) It's a good opportunity for those who want to learn how to tie flies, fly cast, or find out more about fishing in the Tidal Fraser River (or Lower Mainland in general). You also have a chance to talk to people who are working behind the scene, ie. fishery officers at DFO, staff from the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.

I would think that it would be awesome if you guys could get involved, especially at this event held in Richmond.  I've always thought that if we could get the Asian community to realize that bass are a white fleshed fish that not only kind of look like rock cod but could taste a bit like rock cod, that a lot of bass populations would dwindle.  Also the fact that there is no size limit and that you can keep 4 fish per person would also be a great incentive to help control this invasive species.  After all, if pea mouth chub and NPWs are good enough for soup, then why not bass?

Whaddya think Rodney, print up some leaflets talking about bass and maybe a recipe or 2 in Cantonese/Mandarin/Vietnamese and maybe Tagalog and then the event goers can pick the brains of the WCBA on where to go and how to fish for them!

Edit to add:

Also if we could emphasize the significance of going in pairs because 4+4= 8 fish per pair of anglers!  You could have a LUCKY catch, 8 being a lucky number and such!

Not sure what itosh is trying to say... Chinese people like to kill bass? :o

Jokes aside, this event primarily focuses on Tidal Fraser River's native fish species and fishing, so it's not so relevant. I'd suggest that you set up an event during the BC Family Fishing Weekend (which also sponsors our event) on June 18th to 20th, have people coming to a lake where bass fishing is available and let them try it out since fishing is free during that weekend.

I am not going to commit our family  just yet.........  :-[
The first intake for air cadet summer camp starts July 12 so its very possible that kids 1,2, & 3 get shipped out that weekend to Victoria. or just kid 1 or just kid 2&3....just to make it confusing. lol
I won't find out until June sometime, (actually sometimes it could be the day before they leave :o) which intake the kids are in and what time and where they have to leave from.  Will let you know as soon as I get some info.   :)

so.....one is going to camp for sure, and won't be leaving until the last weekend in July, but..........the middle 2 are on a waiting list and could get a call right up until the day before camp starts and the travel day for the first intake is July 10.  :o The kids can say yes or no if they still want to go or not. Or they may not even get a call at all, its all up in the air. (DND for ya)
Will keep you updated closer to the event. :)

Hi Dave, I always need volunteers so you're welcome to join us. We always lack volunteers on the pier to help kids with the fishing so it's hard for the helpers to take a break during the event.

Sorry haven't gotten back to your email yet, I was away for a few days staring at fishless lakes.

Yep, just show up on the day at around 9am and we'll put you to work. It should be fun. ;) I'll be sending out a email to everyone who is interested in volunteering around a week before the event.

Ten days to go. ;D

So far I've heard back from Dragonspeed, Rantalot, Britguy (?), Funeral of Hearts, Buckwife & family (?), IamCanadian, newsman regarding volunteering, plus a few more from flybc.ca. We still need a few more people so if you are available and interested, please let me know. The more people helping out kids on the pier the more fun it is for everyone as it would mean less stress.

Let Rod know soon - it's happening THIS Saturday!

Just a few more days to go now! The weather is looking good, hopefully it stays this way on Saturday! :D

Just confirmed volunteer attendance with most people by email. Rantalot, Dragonspeed, Buckeye, Chris, Chrome mykiss, Trout Slayer, Itosh will be taking care of the kids fishing, aquariums, etc on Saturday. A couple more bodies to help with this would be nice as it usually gets extremely busy. I've asked the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery to only bring 20 rods with them so combining with mine, we will have 30 rods to lend out on the day. There's only so much space for so many rods. If you still want to help out, please send me an email.

If you are bringing your kids, you don't have to show up at 10am sharp as the event is ongoing. Usually it gets extremely busy right at the beginning and tapers off a bit after Noon. It's a good idea to take part in some of the other activities (fly tying, casting lessons, biology workshops, etc) before the fishing if it is busy. The fishing should be better in the afternoon anyway when the tide starts coming in. ;)

Dave.

Hi Dave, you can join Dragonspeed, Rantalot etc with the pier fishing help. :) Basically we need a group of people to constantly pay attention to all the kids on the pier, and also a couple of people to help with having rods ready so they can be given out to kids for them to use all the time.

We will be setting up at 8:30am and event starts at 10am. We'll be setting up around 5 to 6 tents plus a bunch of tables and chairs. If you'd like to join us for setup, please feel free to come by anytime after 8:30am. If not, right before the event start is fine. :)

Last year I had printed out some sheets to do a "creel survey" during the event just so we could keep track on how many fish and what kinds were caught. I'll print them out again for this year so someone can carry the binder around to keep track.

See you on Saturday!

Yesterday we took a look at the river briefly, even wet a line. :) Water clarity is actually not bad. Lots of pikeminnow and chub around. It should be a good weekend if this weather keeps up. :)

Chrome Mykiss, Nina and I are going to be at the pier at around 8:30am with tents to set up. Dragonspeed and FFSBC are arriving with tables and chairs at 9am. We need a few more bodies to set up tents, tables and chairs. If you can come earlier, then please let me know.

Still trying to cool down after today. The turnout was excellent! I didn't manage to take many photos because there was quite a bit to do, but I think Dragonspeed got some good shots as usual. :) Thanks to all who came out to support it. We wrote up around 150 juvenile saltwater fishing licences. More about the event later when photos are ready.

Here are some photographs from today. I only took a few but Dragonspeed and others should have more available.

Extremely patient fly tyers! Look how many kids were around the table. This basically went on for several hours straight. We need more volunteer fly tyers next year to cut down the work load.

Many thanks to all who came and helped out at the event. Thanks to Funeral of Hearts (Dave), Ratalot (Rene), Dragonspeed (Brian) and his Venturers, Buckeye (George) for putting up with all the kids on the floating dock. ;D Thanks to Nineweight (Mike) and Tanya from the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC for coming out from Abbotsford to distribute fishing rods, bait etc and running draw prizes. Thanks to the guys at FlyBC and Tim for helping out with the fly tying. Thanks to Buckwife, my neighbour Jen and Natalie for doing the fishing licences. Thanks to Newsman for doing the flycasting, Chrome Mykiss for taking care of the fish in the aquariums despite of a few belly uppers. ;D Thanks to Chris and Itosh for showing up at the end to help with the take-down and cleanup. Thanks also to those who came earlier to set up the tents etc with us, the drama made things more interesting but it was a relief that everything worked out. ;D

Next year's event will be on July 9th. :)

Most kids caught at least a fish. Most abundant species caught were sculpins as usual. Some peamouth chub and northern pikeminnow were caught. A very large northern pikeminnow was caught by a little girl near the start of the event. A cutthroat trout was caught near the end of the event. No flounders, shad, shiners and suckers were caught.

So on behalf of all the smiling children yesterday, THANK-YOU.

I've got a kick-my friend pair of calf burns that run from where my socks ended to where my shorts started.  Ouch.

Good times, lots of people and lots of fish!  I swear there was no cutthroat... I didn't get a picture of it. ;)

I think the day went very well! 2010/07/10 is now stuck in my head after writing it down all day.......Turned out to be a L-O-N-G one for us...up at 5 and not getting back into Chwk until after 11!  8)
Needless to say we're just kinda hanging around today........watched soccer.... ::) dumb octopus
We too are sporting some red colored flesh here and there, but not near as bad as I thought it would be.

Was planning to possibly drop by via the bike but yesterday's BC Lion game along with some red wine kinda had me feeling "lousy".

Lesson learned till next time  (ha)

Very happy the event was such a success.
Thanks for FWR as it is a big plus for us in BC.  Ya couldn't have asked for a nicer day. (not too windy or rainy)

11pm??? What were you all doing after supper?? :o We went home and melted on the couch. :-\

If you guys have feedbacks on this year's event, please let me know. What other activities you'd like to see set up for kids? What other pampering services should we provide for volunteers? ;) Nina and I will be making a list of things we want to see or don't want to see for next year's event in the next few days, so please let us know. :)

to make a long story short.....we were hanging out with Chris.... :D
went to White Rock and walked along the tracks for plucks, did quite well too, I might add....took some pics of the sunset,  ended up in Peace Arch Park where we uhm.....helped rid the park of an over abundance of refundable items.... 8) and then went to McDonald's for a treat & a chat.

Everyone's event pictures turned out great! One or two are a little close for comfort..... ;)

hmmmm improvements for next year....a cot for afternoon siestas for the poor souls that have to get up early to make it on time??  ;D
just kidding....actually I think it went quite well, if you add more stuff, then you also need more volunteers.......which need to be fed, which means more sandwiches, which means I have to get up earlier.. :P :D
