Title: My new goal: Sturgeon
Post by: Funeral Of Hearts on April 19, 2010, 12:55:08 PM
Well i've decided to try sturgeon fishing for the first time this year. I have lived in the lower mainland most of my life and i've been fishing for many many years but this is the year. I've decided to try to catch a sturgeon. I have no boat so I am going to be doing it from shore. Im starting from scratch (no reel and no rod - my bar rod probably won't do).

My question is..

What would you suggest, a star or lever drag reel? I have searched the internet and it seems to be a preference thing although lever drags seem to be a little more complicated.

I have both and i perfer a star drag, but have no problems with a lever.  The lever is good for less experience fishermen as the drag is already set, and they cannot over tighten the drag, this is what most guide boats use.  The star you have to be more careful, as you don't have a easy visual of how much drag is set, as for a rod make sure you hang 24 oz from the tip and see how it feels in the store before you buy it..Some rods don't have enough backbone to throw that kind of weight.

I does not really make a diffence with a star or lever just get the one that feels right for you.

Penn 320 is a good choice for price.( i have 1) star drag
Shimano TLD 20 is a great reel ( I have 3) lever drag very popular sturgeon reel.
Shimano torium 30 (i have 1) lever drag.

Line recommendations 150 lb power pro..

I neglected to mention that i reel left handed so a 321 would work, but not a 320. Not sure if the others come in a left hand retrieve, i'll have to look it up.

150 lb is a little much, i use 100 lb from shore as u can fit quite a bit more on the reel as 150 is thick, penn 320 is a good choice and holds just shy of 300 yards of the 100 braided if spooled tight, b carefull with getting 2 big of a reel though as some dont cast nearly as smooth or far as a 320, penn 330 is a prime example of that, holds a ton of line but cant get 1/2 the casting distance as the 320. dependent where u are fishing lower or upper river the size of weights very, lower river i cast 8 - 14 oz weights no prob anywhere on the lower, upper river is where u get into needing 18 - 24 oz weights and casting those from shore can b quite the pain in the a** as setting ur drag for those can b finicky trying to get good distance on a cast with no backlash. dont no where u plan on fishing but if ur lookin on the lower river i can take u out for a trip or 2 to show u the basic set ups and get u into a few.

I agree I use 65 braided from shore then if you snag up you can break off.hard to break 150 you end up cutting it and loosing lots of line.anything super huge from shore would be hard to land any way better to break off than spool you than cut off

very interesting post
I don't like to hijack the thread but like to know some related information:

what would be the best small size boat for sturgeon fishing??
size and type
thanks.
Title: Re: My new goal: Sturgeon
Post by: Verdi on April 20, 2010, 09:05:15 PM
The reason i recommend the 150lb is not because of the strength, the line is thicker and has a tendency to not bind or cut in on it self, like the thinner line does,  but i do cast from a boat so distance is not an issue..

Some good information. Thanks.

I was thinking of fishing around the mission area (not sure if that's upper or lower). I live in Coquitlam, so the lower river is an option to i guess. I've tried to read up on shore locations and mission was where i thought i would go.

You can catch them in Coquitlam dont waste your gas.

i didn't think the coquitlam area was as productive. Having two kids means less time out fishing so i need to pick my spots more carefully.

also dont forget to get your sturgeon tag. I think you need to have this to even catch/fish for them now but im not 100% on it.

I have seen them caught from shore at a few places below Mission. here is a couple: Brownsville bar & Duncan bar.

If you can figure out how to get to the water on the Stave river side across from Duncan bar it would be even better because we always see sturgeon jumping over there during pink season and also lots of boats anchored catching them  ;) some having better luck then others of course.

Hint - the mill just past the mouth of the Stave is straight across from Duncan bar if i remember correctly. Good luck out there  ;D

I have friends that fish the area from shore that have success. I live in Maple Ridge so I wouldnt go out that way but they do. Sturgeon are all throughout the river. Having two kids means less travel time = more fishing time ;) Trust me I am in the same position as you with the kids. If I were you I would scout out locations in your area on your own before taking the kids. I would give you some locations but my friends might see this and beat me LOL

A had a 10 foot Penn rod that was awesome for shore fishing Sturgeon, cant remember the model number but it was around 100 bucks or so.  Penn 320 is a perfect size reel as they hold plenty of line and can cast very comfortably.

Terminal rig:

--mainline--------------(sliding bar weight)----(large plastic bead)---(large swivel)----dacron leader-----(5/0-8/0 octopus hook)

In the fall, roe works well as bait, dunno about spring as its my first spring I'll be fishing sturgeon.  Also, you can can a 10oz weight about 30 yards with a 8' technium and penn 330, you just have to thumb your reel with the bottom hand and place your top hand above the reel, sort of opposite of how you'd cast a steelhead rod.

Eulachon should be your bait of choice this time of year....also include worms!

get to know someone who fishes dinos, takes a huge step out of the learning curve when someone can show you the ropes, especially if time isn't on your side..... ;)

I would not use anything other than a lever drag, especially if you have others fishing with you....as far as line weight goes.... if you fish faster water or the freshet, using 130 or 150lb lifts the weight off the bottom to easily, = bigger weights. If you are fishing summer (nice weather etc.) the bigger line is OK, but most use 100lb.....(most guides use 130-150, but that is for their clients sake as they don't want pilot error on a large(er) fish!)

Leader length for me is 20-24" with a 9/0 or 10/0 barbless.....

Sturgeon stamp from Mission Bridge and up...... Few places to fish and loads of fun!!!

Berry's has a cheap rod,it's a protac that sells for around 70$.I bought one about 5 years ago and it works great .When fishing from shore you want a longer rod.Mine is an 11 footer awesome for distance plus the backbone for bigger fish.I also dont use slidders from shore either they tend to break easy just use 20# dropper line for your weight but keep it short.
Title: Re: My new goal: Sturgeon

well i bought a rod yesterday. I got an eight foot trophy xl sturgeon rod at a decent price.

Im still leaning towards a star drag reel (penn 321 as i'm a lefty) Im still not sold on the lever drags, i don't like the idea of not having a scrolling guide on a worm gear to guide the line onto the spool evenly. (i know i know the worm gear will be the first thing to blow if i get a big fish on).

Landed over 75 or so before I replaced my worm gear on my 320:)

x2 on the plastic sliders, they just break sending your $7 weight flying off into the Fraser.

I own a Technium and a Amundson Sturgeon.  The Amundson is a blatant knock-off of the Shimano Technium.  Unlike the Technium, the Amundson has a orange tip that's easier to see in low-light, has a hook keeper too.  Fit and finish is good on both rods.  Both rods have handled a couple fish just fine.  They will both cast 10oz comfortably, but any more is more of a lob than a cast.  The Amundson is considerably cheaper than the Technium.

What kills worm gears is when you let the spool get out of synch will the levelwind.  If you reel the end of the line past the line guide, you have to re-synch them or your worm gear is toast.  Keep the worm gear lubed and inspect it from time to time and you'll be fine.

I've got a trophy rod with penn 320.  Has been great set up for the last 3 seasons of hard sturgeon fishing.  The only thing I'd suggest is to get power pro line. I've been snapped off number of times on braided line, and there is nothing mroe frusterating then snapping off. So ya I'd suggest power pro.  Also loosen your drag off when your not using it, it's easier on the gears.

Right. Sounds similar to our Mulloway fishing down under .

We use similar set ups, and probably put in similar hours to get one. The above picture is a mates one, only a small-medium sized fish.

Definitely keen to wet a line for one of these when I finally get to BC(few weeks time!) if anyone is keen to show an aussie the ropes that is ;)

If you aren't doing a ton of sturgeon fishing, a level wind is the way to go..... open face reels are meant for the big fish and lots of use (IMO)... I fish dinos lots so I use an open face.... I have had  different level winds burn out, break and not smooth drag which equals lost fish too often not to step up into an way more expensive reel(s) when you have people out with you, many are first time fishers and it is more friendly for any mistakes they can make. The transition from a level to open is pretty simple as long as you remember to push the line over with your thumb so it doesn't pile up in one spot! (I usually don't have to do this unless the fish had made a long run!)

I appreciate all the help and suggestions.
I bought a penn 321 today and loaded it up with 100 lb power pro. I also picked up the terminal tackle. So all that is left is to get the bait. I'll buy the bait tomorrow and go try my luck on Sunday. Just gotta decide where to go.

Haney Wharf is a popular spot for sturgeon fishing. You can have good success there. The only problem is there are a few snags around. When you walk down to the dock to the right and the end is where most guys like to fish. There are snags there so be aware.

The wharf is barely above the water. You will have no problems landing a fish there.

Im not entirely sure where it is. Is it near the Haney bypass? With access to it off river road? Its a hard place to find on google maps.

I have never tried cured roe, so i don't know if it will work. somebody else might know.

Today I went out and gave sturgeon fishing a go for the first time. Within the first hour i hooked one and lost it after a few shakes and then 15 minutes later got another one on which I landed. Nothing too big but a good start to sturgeon fishing. My first sturgeon ever!!!!!! I can't wait to go again, it was a blast.

Just a quick question. I have seen people fish with their hook and bait off of the bottom. Does it really matter if your bait is on the bottom or just a few inches off?

Thanks

P.S- Nice fish :)

Bait is on the bottom, it is important the bait sit on the bottom, and does not spin in the current.
In fast current i trim off the gill plate and fins and tail off my eulachans, also the head to be legal..
Even my roe bags i hang them with knot on the down river side of the hook as to not have it not spin..

I must say I am very excited about your sucess. i just started salmon fishing on the vedder this last season. got into my first steelie, however i am interested in rigging myself for some sturgeon. whens the best time for sturgeon? i assume they would be more plentiful and fat durring salmon season.

Usually you do want your bait sitting on the bottom........ but, sometimes a longer leader and let the bait "rise" a few inches will bring success that wasn't there before..... ;)

^I wonder if thats just because the bottom couple inches of water is moving slow compared to current speed and that couple inches off the bottom distributes the scent trail farther.

That's interesting to hear, because I've wondered what would dictate the minimum leader length for sturgeon as they're effectively blind when feeding.  What's to say a 2" (hypothetical) leader would be too short.

My shore fishing setup for sturgeon is a 10 foot Uglystick and a Penn 321 with 80 lb. Tuffline, solid combo for a reasonable cost.  Landed lots of fish( biggest being 7 footer at the mouth of the Coq )without any issues.  You can pull awfully hard on the Uglystick without any worry.

Matt-
Everyone is different in the way they rig (to a certain extent) their bait.... with eulachon I like to take off all fins, front of head (up to the eyes) and gill plates to have them lay flat, especially in faster water... with the two half hitches and other rigging I do, the 22-24" leader now is roughly 14" from the swivel/weight and have fairl constant action with dinos..... if action is slow, I might go with a longer leader, leave a couple of fins on to help "lift" the fish a bit and move it around, sometimes stimulates the fish into taking the bait, even when they are full! For my style of fishing (boat and shallower water at times), I like short(er) leader and heavier leader, have lost several very large fish this year to broken/rubbed leaders (first fish on new leader) and hooks are another consideration!

what is the best type and strength of leader recommend?

If I was shore fishing I would use the 96lb dacron sturgeon leader, sold at A & N ..... it is soft with a little stretch and usually shore fishing equals snags so you do want to use less ## than main line! With it being a "flatter" line and soft, it is easier on the fish as  the smallers ones (big one too!) tend to roll. I like 9/0 or 10/0 hooks and the smaller fish will even take these no problem!

The dinos are finally moving around quite a bit now so if you can, pick 3-4 places to fish and if you have the right bait, you will be very successful!

I had really bad luck with snags at that dock! Where did you fish from? I heard a boat sank right off the dock and that might be what I was snagging, either that or all the dead wood around there.

I tried up from the mission bridge today with worms and eulechins  no luck though just alot of small fish stealing worms and getting our heart pumping nice spot though does the tides make a difference in sturgeon fishing we fished the falling tide so I blame our lack of luck on that.

Another place to try is the Whonnock warf and just up from there on the old docks.  Did really well there when I first started.  One thing to think about on the Penn 320 or 321 is to take off the line guide.  Just a matter of time before you hook into a big fish and the line is on one side of the reel and the guide on the other..
Cheers

I managed to get my first of the season to Funeral of hearts... haha, it was similar sized to yours. Missed a few bites tho. My friend said there is a dock in New west that isn't as snaggy and he saw some guys have decent luck there. Also, I was fishing at the surrey public wharf and it isn't too bad either. Apparently someone landed a 6 footer there yesterday

Cool. Congrats on your catch. I'm sure i missed a few bites too, being a rookie it comes with the territory. I have heard of those docks (new west and surrey) but im not sure how to get to the new west one so i never bothered.

I think this is the dock, although I have never been there myself. Perhaps someone can confirm this.

Enjoying following your sturgeon progress funeral of hearts...great picture you posted...

Your kids are probably excited about dad catching a dinosaur....did you have them at the wharf with you?

If the dock is the one in front of the old BC pen then its a good place to fish but because the dock is high out of the water its hard to handle the fish.

Unfortunately my kids have not been out sturgeon fishing with me yet, too cold for them. But they are enjoying the video and pictures.

I went out again today and managed a 3 footer and a 5 footer. The five was a ton of fun to bring in.

Right on FoH, today was an awesome day it seems. I had a good day as well, within 1.5 hours I managed to catch three 4-5 foot sturgeons!

One seemed to have a really bad accident previously. It was torn mouth to gill but it seems it has long since healed.

Thanks. I took my fillet glove last time i was out so i wouldn't get cut up. I just got it wet before i handled the fish and it seemed to be ok.

fished the bedford channel and the albion area of the fraser today...had a few nice bites but wasnt quick enough to set the hook.  was a good day out any how... we saw some nets out... are the natives allowed fishing  forthe oolies?  saw a man catch a seven footer... off the ferry dock  was nice to see that the fish where around.. bad thing was the fishing partner had to call it a day once the rain came... sapperton landing maybe next weekend...

I use Kevlar gloves.  Ordered from Cabelas.com for $15.

I also used them when handling barracuda in Mexico.  Work great.

Army & Navy has the cheapest prices - $8 for 5.
They are marked as "Smelt", I think, on the packaging.

Those are Columbia river smelt, nit the same as Eulachon...... will work on occassion, but you need the real thing! I buy in 25 pound blocks, partial thaw and zip lock into bags of 10.... get roughly 22 bags... if you are a serious dino fisher, best way to go at roughly $0.57 each compared to $1.60 each!

That sounds very tempting, and id love to take you up on that offer but i already promised my wife that i would have a family day on saturday and that I would take my daughter to her swimming lessons. Sunday is my designated fishing day this week. I am taking a friend out for his first time sturgeon fishing. Unfortunately we'll be fishing from shore but at least we'll be getting out. Thanks for the offer though.

I have abunch of roe in my freezer too. It's cured though.

Great thread Funeral of Hearts.  ;D Nice Sturgeon as well! After reading this thread I now want to pick up another rod(Something heavier duty) and try fishing for sturgeon again since I haven't gone fishing for them since I was 17. (I'm 25 now so it's been a REALLY long time)

Good reading and tips guys. :)

It was a little slower last weekend. The flow in the river is up and its not so easy to keep the bait still on the river bed. Still caught a few small ones though.

quick question...can i use a whole fish as bait for sturgeon? i heard you must take the head off from another angler on the river. we looked through the synopsis and couldn't find anything on the subject, is there any regulations on how you rig your eulachon? single barb-less hook of course... heading out tomorrow

in the freshwater regulation synopsis on page 9 it says that sorry i did not clarify i am fishing below the misson bridge so it would be tidal water.  where in the tidal regulations does it say headless?

I haven't noticed a difference. I've actually caught more on a dropping tide than an incoming. That being said, I believe most people say to fish the incoming.

i have noticed that depends on deep the hole is that your fishing. If its real deep it does not matter if it's shallow then it's as soon as the tides peaks and is on it's way out.

Hello all,

Ive been following this thread in hopes to catch some sturgeon. I recently bought an 8ft technium rod, a penn 321 gt2, and some 100lbs Tuff line. Never casted a level wind before, so for the past couple days thats all i've been practicing. I haven't bought any terminal tackle yet, so any recommendations would be appreciated. Also if someone would be willing to take the time, to teach a new guy that would be great. I live in Vancouver so the only place I've been too is the dock on no.3 road in Richmond. I am willing to drive out and meet someone who would be willing to teach me the ins and outs of sturgeon fishing. You can get my contact info on my profile page.

There are a lot of sturgeton fishermen at the no. 3 dock. Just ask one of them! I usually fish there once a week.

Instead of a slider I just use a large snap swivel. Also for the hook size I use 8/0 or 9/0 barbless gamakatsu hooks. As for weights, it depends on the current and tides where you are fishing. For the lower fraser 10-16oz is usually enough.

tides dont really affect the bite i find...they only affect how you anchor in the lower river.

I see alot of people using 12foot Ugly sticks and big spinning reels, any reason why more people dont use baitcasters?

the advantage of spinning setup is the casting distance which baitcasting can't compare.  Also, if you cast out too close you'll have high chance of getting a snag due to the cable line, logs at the bottom.
tide lines.
