This Saturday, April 17th, is the first Vedder River cleanup of the year! We'll be meeting at the Great Blue heron Nature Reserve between 8:30am and 9:30am. Volunteers will then be sent to many locations, from the canal up to the hatchery to pick up litters from river banks, trails etc. Please bring appropriate footwear and clothings (it looks like a warm day on Saturday!). Garbage bags will be provided. Some gloves and pick-up tools will be available as well, but you are welcome to bring your own. Tim Horton's donuts, coffee and juice will be available once again at registration!
The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve (http://www.chilliwackblueheron.com/) is at the southern end of Sumas Prairie Road (turn off from Keith Wilson Road).
It looks like steelhead fishing is pretty good right now based on recent numbers of catches being reported, so be sure to come out, help the river by participating in this event and do a bit of fishing afterward!

Very good, I remember that you indeed got one last year on cleanup day. I believe it is good karma as anyone that comes to the cleanup and then goes fishing should hook a steelhead. ;D ;D
Thanks Rodney for posting the information, lets hope we have a good turnout once again from this forum.
-
Can we show up late??? what is the time framer expected???
PM
-
It best if you get there no later than 10 as we tried to have the all the cleanup crews back from the river around noon.

I would help out if somebody provided free transport all the way from Coquitlam.
Otherwise, I just do my part by not littering. Wish everybody else would just respect the environment that they fish in and do the same.
-
I will be there with a couple of friends by 9:00 AM.
Any later than that, and the best fritters and doughnuts are gone! :D
I'll be in waders, so Chris and Lou can assign a tough task to my team. ;D

If you really want to go, it can be arranged. Can you be at the Coquitlam IKEA parking lot at 8:00 AM?
Make sure to bring your rod and waders and plan for a long day because I will be fishing after the cleanup!

Nope, I am planning to fish until at least 7PM, so back in town around 8:30-ish.
Don't care for hockey really.

This gives me an idea.
How about a pub gathering in Chilliwack from 7-10 pm?

Sorry, but I don't do pubs if I am driving. No fun in going to a pub without enjoying a few drinks...;)

How about fishing to your heart's content till 9, then showing up in the last hour for dinner and and to catch the last period of play?
Is anybody else up for the idea?

Can't you just record the game and watch it when you get back home?
Or just come fishing with me and I'll get you back home in time for the last period.
Sorry, Nutterbug, I really don't care much for the pub atmosphere...

Understood. But still an idea worth putting forth to the group.
Rod and everyone else, you in? Pick a pub and book a table?
-
Looks like a good friend reminded me I need to do this. See you all around 9am tomorrow.

So this idea fails? I thought it would be a good way to get together and toast and celebrate a job well done, even if you're not into hockey or the pub atmosphere.
I guess you win, milo. Sure you want to stay out so late though, since it's supposed to rain tomorrow?
-
Once again, job well done by all who showed up! :)

Good to see the Mayor of Chilliwack and her husband take part at the cleanup as well.

For the tourism and business that the Vedder fishery brings to their town's economy, I'd say they owe it.

Yes you are correct but it is too bad more other users of the river do not take part but saying that anglers that do not attend the cleanups do pick up garbage when they are out fishing which is much appreciated.
-
*sigh* does fortune come with fame?? ;D
Personally, I think it was a great day, our section had less garbage than usual, so maybe people are finally starting to pick up after themselves. The rain held off until we were done, and getting to eat lunch in the VIP section was quite a treat.... ;) lol

I was also surprised to see considerably less garbage on the river. It was nice to see

Thanks for coming up, I hope you found a fish after the cleanup.
-
Thanks for comiing up, I hope you found a fish afer the cleanup.
Nope. Milo and I threw some flies but after tossing flies for 3 hours I got bored and went home. He stayed with no fish to hand but put in another 4 or 5 hours after I left. He is a more diehard steelheader than me. I am just anxious for my stillwater fishing. I cant think of steelhead knowing the lakes are just coming off now.
You know I am more than glad to do my part Chris. Always wanting to help and give back. Its a pleasure.

Total garbage and metal picked up last Saturday:
870 kg garbage – 190 kg metal - Chilliwack sections
FVRD sections - Game and Fish Club= 870 kg garbage – 560 kg metal
Thanks to all that took part.
