Anyone know if Lighning lakes (manning park) is ice free yet? Im driving to the pentiction area this weekend and was thinking of stopping somewhere on the way to toss a few flies...
-
i doubt its ice free yet. usually a few more weeks until that happens. but it is worth a try to stop and look, there are some nice big trout in those lakes. :)

Not a chance...

Yeah - it's usually more like May/June.

that's a joke right? or are those lakes now getting broodstock? The place seems to have lots of small fish up to the 3rd lake.

my dad caught a 7 pound wilder in there five years back ;)
there are a few wild biggies in there. just not many. ::)
-
a 7 pounder?!! Wow.
The biggest I've seen in there is 15 inches.....and that was considerably bigger than most of the other fish I've seen there (the usual is more like 8 - 10 inches)
I guess every lake has few big ones though, so your Dad was obviously luckier than most!
Did he catch it fishing bait on bottom or with a fly?
-
Most lakes have some big old predators hanging around. To catch them requires a different mindset. It comes down to this truth, "doing the same old thing day in, day out, will net you the same old results." to break out of the box, you need to think outside the box.
Thing to remember: Predators like meat.
Things to ask yourself: Is my offering big enough? which would you prefer, a peanut or a steak?

lol what we troll in all the local lakes. ford-fender or a willow leaf, with a wedding ring and worms. fresh wriggling worms ;D
best of luck. that fish is still in there as we released it. (unless some predator got it or it was caught or it died of old age).
but i figure that was a once in a decade kinda catch for those lakes. the biggest fish besides that one i or my dad have caught since then has been roughly in the 14-16 inch range.
best of luck.
