Well i decided to try some trout fishing today and headed off to Mill Lake
I got there around 10am to find no one fishing
This left me thinking was i too early to catch some trout on the fly
As i had driven so far i was not going to let this put me of
first cast i felt a tug,
was not sure if it was bottom
second cast and a big tug, I set the hook and quickly realise i have a big fish on
It turns out to be about a 4-5lb brood stock
Could not get it in my landing net so I quickly un hooked it at the side of my tube
i then noticed a hatch going on and lots of fish rising
I was soon into a few 16 inch fish, they were so fresh looking
then i hooked a few smaller ones that were so acrobatic
Anothe tuber joined me but i did not see him hook anything
it slowed down around 12.30 just as i was joined by a few boaters
I left at 2pm and was happy with my choice of where to fish for the day :)

thanks for the great report...

I would be happy too! What flies were working?

I would be happy too! What flies were working?
now that would be telling ;)
its a case of try this try that
this fly has worked well for me after a lot of try this try that
and a lot of reading so I am holding on to this tip sorry :-\
I could tell all who read this what fly it was but if it is not fished the right way then some may say i miss lead them
Its like steelhead fishing If i said a pink worm got me into some fish and some who read this may go out and try a pink worm with no sucsess, they may think i was miss leading them
in other words its not just about the bait\fly etc it's about reading the water and trying this and that ;)
so get out there, practice and have some fun :)
if you see me on the water then sure i will show you the fly, but you will have to watch the way i fish it :D
I may even be fishing it the wrong way :-\, who knows as i am no expert
-
stop fishing that Chironomid i showed you at Lafarge ;) its my little secret LOL or were you getting them on that secret green wooly bugger ;D
I will probably be running into you soon at Lafarge, talk later bud

"What flies were working?"
If you had read the report more carefully, you'd realize that Britguy gave you quite a few clues.
...I got there around 10am to find no one fishing...
......then noticed a hatch going on and lots of fish rising...
...it slowed down around 12.30 ...
Now add this info: It's early March, but more like late March or early April in a regular year. Plus, it's been unseasonably warm for quite some time.
Mill Lake is an almost zero elevation lake, small, AND rather shallow.
A hatch to which fish rise is on at 10 and basically over by 1:00 PM.
Put all the above information together and you will know what type of fly he used. ;)
My bet is on either a pheasant tail nymph or some other mayfly nymph imitation, but hey, it could be anything.
Plus, the colour, size and retrieve can vary greatly from day to day.
Each hatch has its quirks and each fly fisher matches those quirks in a different manner.

Thanks Milo
i thought i had given enough clues to those that fly fish ;)
For those that dont fly fish dont need to know :D
I have worked hard to find a fly that works so i am not willing to just give that up to all who read these posts :-\
like Milo says work it out
Hook you have mail

I might be going tomorrow, is it worth trying for bass?
-
Always...try the west corner (that's to the right of the dock), where the weeds are.
-
Thanks Milo, what should I use for bait?
Thanks.

This thread is pretty pathetic.
Secret chronimid techniques for stocked Trout in Lower Mainland lakes? You guys have to be kidding me :-\
At this time of year those fish (especially with recent stocking) will be so stupid they will hit just about anything that looks like food. I've caught them on 4" rapalas while fishing for bass. But when I do bother to fish Mill lake I typically just stick to your standard searching pattern ie spratleys, careys, micro leeches etc.
As for bass at this time of year, I've tried before and never really been too successful. IMO its too early, but then again I don't really consider myself to be much of a bass fisherman so perhaps a more seasoned basser would have more success.

Thanks.
Don't know, man, I don't use bait.
I am guessing dew worms should work.
But if you want to try some metal, a flatfish is hard to beat.

If you are talking about largemouth bass I can tell you that they usually aren't very active at all until mid summer. You need a big spike in water temperature before they come alive. Now if it is small mouth you are dealing with then it should be game on this time of year. BTW, I don't think this thread is pathetic. I like the little guessing game. And besides is it really wrong to share a little information between fellow fisherman regardless whether they are a stocked fish or not? Just my two cents. :)

Lets see three boats, two tubes (six fishermen) and i was the only one catching fish that day :-\

My post was not meant to tease anyone ,I just thought mentioning about a lake and how I did that day may help others to think about dusting the cobwebs off the fly gear and getting out to some of the local lakes as the weather has been warmer than usual for this time of year
I did not realise i had to give a blow by blow account of what i did and what i used that day
my bad, :-\

If you want to throw something shiney then stand between the dock and the point and cast small Krocs. The bigger trout will hit them.
Also works if you anchor at the logs in the middle and throw Krocs there as well. No big deal. Pull a Wedding Ring spinner tipped with worm - it all works.
Lot's of ways to productively fish Mill Lake. Some people take the fish home - others like myself release them for someone else to enjoy.
Personally I only use flies now - mostly chronies, sometimes pheasant tail nymphs, sometimes small half backs - often small green sparkle leech with brass beadhead and sparse, thin wooly buggers in green/black.

Lakes like Mill are good for getting the boat out and trying your luck. Fly pattern type is not going to help most chowder hounds from getting their daily limit. Probably OK to say what fly pattern is CURRENTLY working. I would go with what Rieber posted and also never stop trying new flies. :)
