Don't worry yourself with clubs, guy. Some people call them priests and go out of their way to get the word "dispatch" into a conversation about bonking a fish, but there really isn't anything sanctimonious or glorious about it.

It's a club. Fish gets bonked and dies - done. It ain't pretty, may as well stomach it and move on.

Worry yourself with how long your leader is supposed to be like the rest of us and leave the club out of general discourse.

My advice anyway,

Jon

What's the big deal if he likes to have an actual implement to bash a fish over the head instead of just using a rock? Some people like to use a priest, just because he uses one doesn't mean he's sanctimonious. Fly fisher I just use a rock and cut the gills out straight away and bleed the fish out. My Dad back in England used to have a homemade priest that was a slender piece of wood that had a hole drilled in it and then was filled with lead. Could see how this could be a more effective and humane tool than a rock but that would just be splitting hairs IMO. Once you've decided to pull the fish out of the water the most important thing to me ethics wise is not how it is killed but that this kill doesn't go to waste,
Nick

His "Church" is below the water's surface it seems.

As for the bonker, any nearby club will do  :D

Use gravity.
The head should be at a lower angle than the tail.

I'm surprised more people don't jsut punch them. It sounds ridiculous, but a solid punch with the fish lying on a rock will do it in one quick action. ;)

I have jsut recently fully invested my time into fishing, and have always heard about bleeding a fish, but I have two questions;
1) how do you remove the gills or where do you cut them to do this.

2.) what are the benefits of doing it over just bonking it and then filleting it?

Thanks guys!

the heart beats for a few minutes after you bonk them
andrew5  1 once its bonked reach in and pull them out or slice them in half with a knife
then grab it by the tail and hang it till it stops bleeding
2 keeping the blood in can cause the meat to spoil faster and it keeps a healthier color without the blood
hope this helps

WTF? I'd love to see what cro magnon man head butts a fish, do they head butt little 12" trout too? that's almost as classy as the guy who killed a steely on the little campbell today, if you head butt fish you can give yourself a pat on the back, losers....weak

just bite the heads off the little guys and spit them out.  bonk, bleed all in one step.

Seriously though, if you're knee deep in the river with grass riverbanks, there won't be any rocks nearby to bonk your fish.  A small club could come in handy...

I've used one before, and now am looking around for one but haven't found a local supplier yet.  Maybe I'll have to make it myself.
