Its really up to you regarding gear.  Any decent rod with a stiff backbone 6-7ft would be a good start.  A medium sized spinning reel with some 8-12lb line would be a good start.

Any combo in $75 (and up) range should be decent enough to give you trouble free operation.

Head in to Reaction Fly and Tackle if you are close to their.  They will be able to set you up with gear and lures/plastics that will help.  Don't go fly blind into a walmart or crappy tire.  Use advice, its why tackle stores are always the best option.

I would urge you to go the spin casting route for a while, before baitcasting.  Unless you have experience throwing one, it will cause you more headaches than it is worth, especially when you are just starting out.

Cheers!

If you want a good setup that is cheap head to wal-mart and get a ugly stick combo 6'6" or so i just got a combo for 39.99$ I have owned many of these rods and hands down i have to say the are the best you can get for the price. They are virtually unbreakable.

I guess i should be more specific. i will be using topwater baits, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and plastics so i was wondering what rods and reel styles work best for each. i use baitcasting reels for all my salmon and steelhead fishing.

after watching many shows on bass fishing over the years i have noticed that the majority of guys use level wind reels and usually a 1pc 7foot medium action rod for bass fishing. of course you can use anything you choose  ;) I would presonally use a fly rod  ;D

Bass are pigs and take almost anything you throw at them.I normally use whole dewies or plastic worms rigged with a tiny split shot right above the hook.Kind of like a jig but i find most jig heads are to heavy,so the small splitty works well.

I don't want to go off topic but can you catch bass in the lower mainland? The only time I ever caught bass was up at Christina Lake past Grand Forks when I was a little kid.
So technically I've never been bass fishing before? Can I get by with my spin rod I use for trout?

There are many opportunities to catch large mouth bass in the lower mainland.  Especially if Ray is planning to fish the Pitt Meadows, Abbotsford, Mission areas.  This site suggests a few good spots to start http://www.anglingbc.com/index.cfm/page/86/Places.html.  You can definitely get by with trout rod.  As Rantalot said, bass with take almost everything, but in terms of flies (in my experience), you can't really go wrong with black or olive wooly buggers.

Stickbaits and plastics have been dynamite for me. (Thanks Noxscape :)).  Searun fly and tackle in Coquitlam were well stocked with these last year which was convenient because it is right between Burnaby where I live and all the bass spots I was heading out to.

Hi there ray,  they were selling soft bodied senko's and soft bodied worms with a wriggling action.

Noxscape has a wealth of knowledge on this topics and I got all of my original tips from him then just went out there and tried things.  My experience trying this out last year is these critters will hit on just about anything that moves but these are the things that seemed to work particularly well for me:

I would say, start out with a small (cheap) selection of things and see what you have the most confidence in.  Personally I avoid the expensive top water baits simply becuase the soft plastics are way cheaper and very effective.

If you want more floatation on some of your bait then just inject them with air with a syringe.

the easiest thing to try to start bass fishing with is to wacky rig a soft plastic stick bait which is a senk lol bait that you can take a 3/0 off set hook and stick it right in the middle then you jsut toss it out and let it sink and watch your line for movement
toads like those that where mention are an awesome top water baits i use big bite bait toads  rigged with a 4/0 or 5/0 worm hook and you jsut run them across the top of the watter and the legs make a bubbling action
those are easist baits to use
also you can use spinner baits with you would use the same way you use a spoon pretty much cast and reel
for colours in stick baits i like to use a green/pearl colour
for toad i use a white toad
and for spinner baits i like a blue and white coloured bait

if you need more infor jsut drop me and email or check out the links on my signature

Dear Noxcape

I guess i can buy those
-White toad
-Spinner blue and white (What size should it be? 1/4oz?)

I have a medium rod (it's for trout, but w/e i guess it works with bass cuz it's more of a bass rod) with 6lb test, is it ok to use with bass?

Get yourself some tube jigs in 1/8 and 3/16 0z and a few bags of tubes. I prefer watermelon and pumpkin seed colours that alone will keep you busy with the bass. cast them out let them sink to the bottom and wait a few seconds then hop them back. by lightly lifting your rod tip, let sink and repeat. Play around with different retrieves and see what they prefer. If your getting snagged lighten your jig wt.

--they are good solid rods for the money. I think Army & Navy would have them in your area.
--I have several models spin, fly and bait cast rods all about 3 yrs old haven't had any problems with any of them.
--the components are higher end than I would expect given the price of these rods.
