Title: Fishing Jigs For Stealhead?
Post by: aquapaloosa on January 07, 2010, 11:13:39 PM
I finally after many years of fishing stealhead, I caught one using a pink lead head jig.

I was drift fishing it under a float but I am really wondering how to use them in low clear water under a floats or how others do this.
What is a good way to rig this?
I have also heard of certain way of drifting these jigs to give them action or motion.

Any ideas?

Main line - float - weight - leader - jig

A dead drift with the float would be best, that would give nice natural pulsating movement with the material on the jig. There is always an exception to the rule, but the jigging motion usually works best for coho or pinks.

Try reading this - http://www.bentrods.ca/bc-fishing-articles.htm

There's also a pretty good article about twitching jigs here - http://www.steelheaduniversity.com/Twitchin.html

If you can make it you should check out the jig fishing and tying seminar at Hatch Matchers

I have used jigs successfully in the relatively slower, deeper water of the Stamp.   1/8 oz jigs in that case.     On the Chilliwack the flow generally seems too fast for jigs.     Will 3/8 oz jigs work successfully in the fast flow?

More questions:

Does anyone ever use rubber on their jigs of any kind or even mr. twister style?

Whats better marabou or bunny fur?

I run 1/4 oz most of the time. During the mid winter low waters that seemingly occur every year, I'll drop down to a 1/8 oz.

I often tip my jigs with half a rubber worm or a mr twister.

And I personally fish rabbit fur over marabou, due to the fact that it is more durable and easier to tie with.

type in steelhead jig into google and look at the options. Hackle jigs, rabbit jigs, all schlappen, all marabou, combo's, pink worm jigs, jigs made specifically for fishing BAIT! there are so many colours and styles that it doesn't much matter, the key to jigs is that they get you down in the zone and keep you there. Fish em hard, and with confidence. Take a few colours and go. I'm a finatic and have tons, others only have 2 or 3. keep to what you know works.

Great!

Thanks for the info.  I to like the rabbit fur best and have made some jig with rubber.  If you crazy glue the rubber against the head of the jig you never have to push it back up...ever, works real nice.

Find yourself some better hooks. That will bend on the first fish you hook and you will be left disappointed.

I've had better luck with the tail facing up and away from the hook instead of down.

I have little experience for steelies with jigs but the steelie smolts in rivers will hammer them when they are cast out and twitched in.

And get good jig heads with strong hooks.  I got mine at Berry's but they are made by Searun tackle in Coquitlam.

I also caught many coho this year by sticking a float on and twitching the jig through pools.  Definatley not a standard technique as it really stirs up the water but the fish didn't seem to care.

Well it looks like the rivers will not be fishable this weekend with all the rain coming so if you are wondering the best way to tie jigs and fish them then take the seminar that Rod from Bent Rods is putting on this saturday at Hatch Matchers. It will be the best $5 you will spend. Phone the store to sign up. I think there is only about 10 or so spots left. You even get to tie 2 of your own.

Thanks for the invitation.  Gladly,  I live on the island so I will not be making it there.
The rivers have all burst already.  Its a total blow out!

yg, are those dumbell eye ones tied on jig hooks?
If so do you have difficulty with the leader wrapping around the eyes?
Title: Re: Fishing Jigs For Stealhead?
Post by: younggun on January 14, 2010, 01:31:06 AM
yea those are on jig hooks, and no i haven't had any problems, jigs are meant to ride parrallel in the current, and ur knot should sit straight up off the eye of the hook, the line should never get a chance to wrap up.

as you can see the dumbells are big ones, but they're not that heavy so i fish those with lighter gear. thats the reason why the jigs themselves are smaller in size.

i have more, they're in my vest, too lazy to dig em out. These guys are just stock for the soldiers missing in action.

These are some flesh version I made.

This one is my fave.  I have never even fished it but I like how it looks.  My favorite flesh jig anyway that I tied.

order them from RVRFSHR in Oregon, they come pre poured with lead heads. You then powder paint them with Pro Tec paint. The painting is unbelievably simple and easy to do, quite cheap too and you will get a more durable finish than the Aerojig's.

Where can a guy get  the powder paint from?

I would rather not order it from the states.

I think tackle shops should carry them. I got mine from Bob's Sporting couple of years ago. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business.

go on the Pro Tec website and check it out, they should also have some dealer lists as well. I picked up Chartruse, Orange, Pearl, and Pink from a supplier on ebay, bout $5.00 for each color and $4.25 for shipping. I also picked up an orange from Reaction, but they only had a color or two. Good to buy local, but sometimes local just does not have the selection that some larger tackle suppliers in the States have.

I am telling you though, you will not believe the quality of the paint finish that the Pro Tec has! it blew me away, just like a professional quality painted jig and it seems to be even more durable.

See if you can order them direct from Bent Rods site. I know he sells the prepoured ones in a bunch of different colours. The last time I was in the tackle shop they had them all.

I checked with bent rods and other specialty shops around Van and had no luck.
I have ordered them from the U S.
The dollar is pretty strong so that is not so bad.  It just takes a while to get that stuff across the boarder and other fees.

what hooks and paint did ya go with?

I did find some paint in Canada but it was not pro tec and did not look very specialized so I went for some pro tec from the U S. Cabelas will not ship the paint accross the boarder and did not have pink. The price was the same but that who know what will happen with brokerage fees.  I always regret U S purchased when I get billed the fee.
The hooks I have ordered from Bent Rods.  They were nice folks.

Thanks for the help.

Are you aware of the businesses in Blaine and Sumas where you can get US orders shipped to? You pay them a couple of bucks for receiving/holding it for you and then take it across the border yourself. If you have the time to travel down there to pick up the order it works well. Particularly if you are under the 24 or 48 hour tax exemption limits.

I live on the island so just popping down there is not an option.
I have heard of ways to avoid such fees or at least have more control of them but I do not shop down there often enough for me to actually pursue that.
Maybe it is time to look at that more closely with our stronger canuck dollar.

i've seen fish taken on lead heads, painted heads, and bead heads. I dont think it plays a huge role in if the fish takes the jig or not!

true, last year all I used was plain lead heads or Rod's brass ones. However, there are certain jig patterns where it is really nice to have the contrasting color of the head, not to mention patterns like egg sucker's. I will always paint mine now, cause its simple, and looks freaking mint!

Found the Jig Tying session at Hatch Matchrs very informative over the weekend - both how to construct and how/when to use.

And for the 5 bucks - got to tie me a couple of nice looking jigs if I do say so myself  :)

However - they will not be entering any 'beauty' contests...  :D

I now have an birthday gift idea for the missus  ;D

In regards to paint if you can't get the pro-tec just use nail polish it also works to accent spoons.
All paint will get chipped eventually but it's easy to touch up.
also, bleach will turn lead (and some other metals) black.
It works as a patina ( I used to make stainglass windows)
