Title: Herring form shore?

Hi,

I was talking to a guy this summer who said it is possible to fish for Herrings at Steveston from the dock,
he also mentioned that I would need a herring rig/jig ( can't remember what he called it  :-\ ).

Is that true or is just something that was possible in the "good old days"?

hey stu,

ambleside had some this year.  One day there will be some and the next day, nothing.  so it's kinda hit and miss.

Thank you for the info. I would go and give it a try, but
where would I get one of those Herring jigs?
I checked A&N but couldn't find anything.

Any tackle shop should carry herring jigs. Army and Navy Downtown does. Ask the salesman

I've seen them for sale at the army and navy in new west, at the time there was one package left. But just ask the salesmen...Im not sure what the regs are for those jigs, the strand has 10 hooks on the line...my salt water regulation knowledge is not too good.

I've seen a guy pull a half dozen up from belcarra wharf while he was crabbing, this was a few weeks ago

My son and his friends catch herring off the dock at belcarra using nothing but a weight and very small silver hook, no bait, jigged a couple feet off the bottom.

I live near the Steveston area and yes indeed they have been catching herring in the steveston harbour just east of no.1 rd. Took my son to buy some at Nikka

The pier in Steveston produces well but it is usually congested and not the only place where you can catch them. Earlier this year I had some success at other spots in the Fraser River mouth too while targeting other species.

Rod is too modest.    I saw him catching herring from shore with a fly rod.    About April I think, after the spawn.

That was a great week for me VAGAbond. ;) I was bouncing between North and South Arms with my fly rod and the same minnow fly, catching trout, char, a few coho and those herring. The herring that I kept, half were spawned out, the other half were still full of roe.

Slack salt those puppies down for 3 months, soak 'em down for 24 hours, bottle fillets with vinegar, onions and pepper corns. Serve chilled. My first job was at a processing plant, salting down 100,000 pounds a day.(by myself ;)) 72 dollars for a 72 hour week. I was a millionaire. ;D
