Title: 2010 Chilliwack River steelhead fishery information & water condition updates
Post by: Rodney on November 30, 2009, 02:53:15 PM

Between early December and late April, the Chilliwack River offers a productive winter steelhead fishery for both local and visiting anglers around the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. While other nearby systems also provide such a fishery, the Chilliwack River yields more success due to the amount of fish being produced by the Chilliwack River Hatchery. This thread has several objectives:

Fishing regulations

Regulations for the steelhead fishery differ slightly to the fall salmon fisheries in BC, so please familiarize by going through the BC Freshwater Fishing Regulation Synopsis (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations) from time to time if unsure. For the Chilliwack River, anglers should be aware of these regulations. Please report violators by phoning 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).

Fish species and identifications

While the primary target species is steelhead in this fishery, several other species may also be encountered. It is important to know the morphological differences between these species so you do not accidentally retain a fish that is not opened for retention.

Steelhead's life history is similar to pacific salmon's. It is a variation of rainbow trout, which has an ocean phase. Unlike pacific salmon, steelhead may not die after spawning. Size range of steelhead from the Chilliwack River ranges between 6lb and 15lb, while bigger fish have often been recorded every season.

Several identification keys can be used to recognize a steelhead. Its white gum and tongue, lack of teeth behind the tongue. Once arrived from the ocean, its body is silver with heavily spotted back. Its tail is spotted from top to bottom and it is not forked. During spawning phase, pink and red colourations become apparent on the gill plates and across the body. Below are additional photos that may assist you.

Resident rainbow trout can also be caught while targeting steelhead. Unlike steelhead, they are typically under 18 inches in length or 2lb in weight. All wild rainbow trout must be released.

Bull trout are often encountered while targeting steelhead and they are required to be released. Their size ranges between 1lb and 10lb. Bull trout can easily be identified by its white and pink spots across the body. Their mouth is large and extends way behind the eyes. The end of their pelvic fins is often white. All bull trout must be released.

Coastal cutthroat trout travel in schools. Several identification keys can be used to differentiate them from rainbow trout. Their body and tail are heavily spotted from top to bottom. An orange slack can be found on the bottom side of the gill plate. Their size typically ranges between 8 and 20 inches. Only hatchery cutthroat trout can be kept. All wild cutthroat trout must be released.

Mountain whitefish belong in the salmonid family. While their body is similar to a minnow, one can easily identify them by locating the adipose fin. Their mouth is small and protudes slightly. Their size typically ranges between 8 and 20 inches.

Conditions looked good this afternoon with dropping water levels and I observed a few rods out checking things out.

Conditions looked good today with a few rods out and about. With the high pressure ridge now dominating the weather pattern that means the East wind is back here in the Valley making getting a good drift difficult at times.

Very cold now too . Water is still pretty cloudy (as of Saturday). Walked the dog there yesterday  . Water is still pretty high for the lower river , 2.2 meters at veddar crossing .It really should be under 2 meters for good lower river conditions . The level should be dropping all week though with the artic blast that's coming in now .

1 Hatchery Marked Steelhead year round?

I thought the river opened on boxing day.

Your allowed 10 hatchery steelhead on an annual angling license with steelhead tag.
You are correct the river does not open till Boxing Day.  ;)

Below Slesse Creek to Vedder Crossing bridge: (a) no fishing May 1-June 30; (b) hatchery rainbow trout of any length
50 cm or less: daily quota = 4, July 1 - Apr 30; (c) hatchery steelhead daily quota = 1, year round

I do not think Boxing Day is the official opening day of retention for steelhead.

Closed all year above and including Slesse Creek
Below Slesse Creek to Vedder Crossing bridge: (a) no fishing May 1-June 30; (b) hatchery rainbow trout of any length
50 cm or less: daily quota = 4, July 1 - Apr 30; (c) hatchery steelhead daily quota = 1, year round
Below Vedder Crossing bridge: (a) fly fishing only, bait ban, hatchery rainbow trout release (50 cm or less), and hatchery
cutthroat release, May 1-31; (b) no fishing June 1-30; (c) hatchery rainbow trout of any length 50 cm or less:
daily quota = 4, July 1-Apr 30; (d) hatchery steelhead daily quota = 1, year round

Call me a loony, but I think it's open all year for steelhead

Did ANYBODY notice the ;) after his (BigFisher's) post?
Jeeze, anybody could read the regs and figure out it is open year round.
Read the regs CAREFULLY and you'll always get your answer, can't rely on other people all the time.
Good luck telling the CO "But the guys on the forum said..." as he writes you a ticket. Not gonna happen.

10 HATCHERY Steelhead A YEAR, 1 PER DAY, as long as the river is open!
Now there shouldn't be any confusion.... ::)

You'll have better odds fishing the vedder than the cap for steelhead, by allot.

No keep any steelhead out of cap and yes you need a tag.

Sorry to hear that bravo. I had the same thing happened to my vehicle on the 3rd week of August @ Lickman Rd. . Luckily I don't keep anything valuable inside my car but I had a tough time explaining it to my 7year old daughter. You'd think they'd back off a little because my daughter's car seat was clearly visible.   >:(

What is with some of you guys? Virtually every break in I read about in these forums is a result of people leaving things in their vehicle in plain view for the thieves to steal. The funny thing is that some of you guys who get broken into complain about it on a public forum like this one....and admit that you left things your valuables in plain view.....showing everyone here that you're not bright enough to figure out why.

I've been fishing the Chilliwack/Vedder and Chehalis for almost 25 years now. 19 of those years with my own vehicle. At over 50 trips a year on average....that is over 1000 fishing trips.....and yet I've never been broken into once. I park at all the same spots as everyone else...but never been broken into. The answer to why my vehicle has never been broken into??? When someone walks by my vehicle and looks in.....they see absolutely nothing but the 'club' attached to my steering wheel. No fishing tackle, no rods, no golf clubs....or anything. If there is nothing in view...the chance of being broke into is almost nil.

Sorry to rant, but these stories about vehicle break-ins are getting a bit much.

Robert I kinda agree but go easy...
I have even parked in Lickman road when 2 other cars were broken into and my car along with 2 others were the only ones left untouched, why?
Well first of all my car isn't all that great, secondly I keep my glove box open and every other compartment open and leave NOTHING in my vehicle.
My trunk is also fully exposed (big window) and nothing is in there so they have no reason to break in.
In my opinion if you want to avoid breakins, leave EVERYTHING open and leave NOTHING visible in your vehicle, these guys will break in for a nickel.
I even know some that leave their doors unlocked in their old beaters, or leave their windows rolled down so they cant break them (in summer).

1 more day till Im home.
Hopefully the river doesnt blow out too bad so I can fish on Saturday and Sunday.  ;D ;D

My strategy of keeping ridiculous ammounts of garbage in my vehicle seems to keep the thieves away from my vehicle.  Never in my life have I had my vehicle broken.  I've parked in some real sketchy places too.

I can't wait to get out there and try my luck with the two-hander this year.   ;D

It seems we use the same tactic. my car is filthy inside...and never washed lol.
I've been off for 4 days and all this rain has kept me home from trying my luck on the vedder....Looks like I may not make it out there until the new year

wow...i can't believe some of you guys.  :(
the poor bastard just got his car broken into and wanted to warn the rest of us...what's wrong with that? just because you think you're vigilant, doesn't mean you're immune. my brothers car got keyed this past summer while parked at a high populated area... Why?  ??? ... because some assh*le thought it was a good thing to do at the time.
knock on wood...hopefully those who think they've got the answers never experience something like that... i call it luck of the draw.

My nephew had his old POS monti carlo broke into for about $1.65 in change that was on the floor, these guys will break into anything, blaming the victim is just stupid, A few years ago they tried to break into Guy Brown  the fish counter guy's canopy while he was sitting in the driver's seat doing his paperwork, don't blame the victim this crap is a result of our failing infrastructure and lack of policing.

I've seen every car parked at Herrling broken into while you had to wade across. They probably didn't see anything in the vehicles just a good place to break in while the guys are across the channel. A rash of breakins probably means some loser got out of jail recently.

Was this thread about the Vedder? ::)

The guy left a $100 worth of tackle in the vehicle.  I think lots of people would consider that normal and safe considering it's not a huge risk.  Just a bummer so he offers a warning, thanks for that.  Recently I had my truck broken into and they stripped out all the factory components.  What the hell do you do about that???  I have an alarm and try to park in well lit areas.  the thieves are the idiots!  the victims are just that.

I also talked to someone at Fred's, and they indicated catching a nice chrome steely up high - somewhere around Alllison Pools.

Just drove over the Vedder at Keith Wilson bridge, and water seems low enough to have a go at the bridge. But might be good to remember: plan for a while since those steelies are movers!

Tight lines and see you out there everyone!

was out today, water was sweeeet! Worked a bunch of runs salivating the whole time. great to get out today, even though no pulls this trip. eagles were in the trees and the weather cooperated. suprised how many people are already out there. must be a lot of others suffering from itchy trigger finger syndrome!

Went out today...
Water vis was great above Allison (was around 4 feet visi and nice green colour). Spent about 2 hours there with nothing....
Moved down to tamahi, around 2 feet vis on arrival. Rain started HEAVY, coloured up fast and we tried beating it down to On the way.
Vis probs dropped to about 6 inches down in the lower.... talked to a couple guys that were going into Thurston on our way out, slides are puking big time now.

No fish to report of.. not even a hit (Yesterday was a quick one hour trip for first one of the year and hit a hatch coho).
One fish weighed in at OTW yesterday... If you get a chance stop in for some sooup at OTW, it's great  ;D

Had a nice breakfast and get together with Pistol Pete this morning. He headed out fishing while I did some last minute shopping. ::) (Thanks for breakfast PP)

I then meet up with him shortly after 12, the water was perfect and reports from some others more fish being caught today including one around where we were fishing. Looks good for the derby on the 26th.

We also heard a member of this board had to pull ashore an person that was being swept down river. I do not name him as he may not wish me too but thanks to him for helping rescue a angler from the frigid waters.

I did have a pull down during the 3 hour outing that I was certain was a fish of some sort. The Maple Leaf Drennan was completely submerged and I was so shocked I did not strike properly and only picked up on the line, some thing on the end was solid for a split second. I know it was not bottom as I was a couple feet clear and to top it off  the float did not go down again in that area after many more casts. What I donot know was it really a steelhead, a late run coho salmon or chum salmon. On one hand I hope it was not a steelhead as I made a bad mistake by not striking properly but we have all done that haven't we? It got the blood pumping thats for sure and it gives one that steelhead fever as we look forward to hopefully a banner year.

River was looking so good today I could taste a steelhead but after about 4 hours on the river with not a pull I then broke off on a snag and that ended my day. Must have been fishing too deep. :o

No one I talked too had or saw any, must have been all caught on derby day. :D Day was not a total blank as I found $2 worth of beer tins. ;D

Will reorganize for another trip tomorrow as most of you will be working and I will have the river to myself. ;D ;D

Hit the flow for abut 4 hours myself today! Beautiful day!  Not to cold either!  Start from top and worked a couple of the same runs i did on the derby day and then went to xplore some other new runs and a few from last year. Chucked out Roe, Jensen Eggs, some spinners...... NOOOOOO luck at all.  4th trip out so far this year.  It took me 7 trips last year before I landed my first wild and that was when i found my honey hole.  It hasn't produced this year yet though.  Regardless, it was a beautiful day, and i'm gettting my center pin casting down.  Gotthe back hand bc cast and everything.  Don't think i've ever use anything else but my centerpin in the veddar now.    Water was great!  Good luck!

Got to keep trying as you never know when the float is going to go down with our first steelhead of the season. That is what keeps us going back time after time isn't it? A chap I know caught his first ever yesterday. :o ;D

Thanks for the reports guys, am going to be up there a few times in the next week chasing that elusive first one. Going to stick to Pinks worms and the jigs. Have probably been faffing around changing up too much. It can be hard to maintain confidence in what you're fishing when you've only had one bite in 5 trips ;D

Didn't see any fish hooked. All I saw was a tomato colored coho sitting infront of me.

Once again I drew a blank today and saw none taken. Water conditions were excellent again and it was a nice day to be out with wildlife to observe and the usual couple of dollars of tins to pay for coffee during a break on the trip. ;D

Getting closer to another chance as I always tell Lew you are after your cast one cast closer to your next steelhead.  ;D ;D A fish of a thousand cast give ot take a few.

Water was lime colored in the upper sections but in the lower sections it was a bit muddy. Caught a nice bull trout in the upper section today but no hookups with steel, conditions were not horrible by any stretch.

Just got back spent the day on the upper and water was 4-6 feet of visiblity and quite clear. Just below the bridge was about 18 inches of visiblity as of noon and lower was pretty murky. Few caught today and will try to post my report at some point. No steel for us today :( beautiful day out though and I feel sorry for those of you that decided to take a pass ;)

Went out for my first trip of the year and brought my bro who's visiting from California.  Had I known that he'd hook and land a wild steelie after his fourth cast, I would have left him at home! :D ;).   No steel yet for me though.  Conditions were great above the slides and and visibility was only about 2ft below.

Yes it did not look very good when I drove over the Freeway Bridge this morning on the way to Abbotsford. I guess the heavy rain we are having contributed to it.

Just got back from fishing the upper.  Everything looks perfect above the Allison slide.  Conditions did not appear to be deteriorating as far as I could tell, only light rain coming down.

Only thing missing was the fish :(

Getting this thread back on topic. I just checked the river in the Lower and visibility was not the greatest, I would say around a foot, silty looking as well. Still raining but the snow level is down part way on the local mountains. Tomorrow will be a toss up, in the Lower anyway.

Called Freds Tackle in the morning. They said lower about 6 inches visibility, and only fishable section is Borden Creek and up. Not much room for all the fishermen to spread out. I guess if Alison and up is fishable then it will be much better. Guess there are more slides between Alison and Ranger on the back side. Can any body verify that?

I believe there is just the Ranger Slide but I seldom fish in that area so not certain. I took a drive up that way for you today and conditions were very good, that is above the slide, that is in the Allison Pool area. Drove up to the Limits Hole and counted 20 vehicles from the Allison up and I got a report of one hatchery taken. Another angler said he lost one.

I stopped for lunch at the Point for a delicious bowl of soup before giving the Lower a try. Conditions were about 12 inches, tried some small slots but nothing to show for it. With the color and high water it makes for tough fishing as you have to be lucky to find a fish, so many places they can be.
I however did find 6 DNE floats including a wooden one, 1 Cleardrift, 1 Drennan and 3 foam floats. ;D

It rained the whole time and with more rain in the forcast tonight I cannot see the Lower being very good tomorrow. I might have to slip to the Upper as we start the 2010 brood capture program tomorrow on the Chilliwack Vedder River. I must try to do better than last year when I only contributed 4, two that I caught and 2 from other anglers.

The slides start at the top of borden, waterfall, prison, back tolmie/allison, tolmie/salesse and theres a tiny one just above tamahi.
Tolmie and borden are the two big ones that make the most mess. The otheres I mentioned are clay bank/ slides that also contribute.

Conditions good today but fishing seems slow. Maybe I say that as I travelled different parts of the river the last two days, fishing around 14 hours total fishing time. Today I only saw 3 caught including one taken behind me by a chap fishing a spoon. :o Total brood stock I understand is 21, behind last years catch at this time. The plus part for today for me was finding a Drennan float, $2 worth of beer tins, getting lots of exercise and lunch at The Point. ;D Maybe tomorrow things will change as I have only hooked but lost two fish for 4 days of fishing this week. ::)

Was out Friday , every thing looked real good except the apparent lack of fish . The level and color are good . Funny thing is , looking at the river level gragh it mysteriously shows an instantaneous drop of about a meter on Jan 27  at Veddar Crossing . The same drop registers at Slesse creek too , but just as fast corrects itself there . The Veddar Crossing station continues with that new lower level . What's up with that?

Water was a little colored when I reached the river after I had lunch with Nick at Cookies. He had tubed one and lost another in the AM. Also heard of 2 others tubed today. I believe the count is 29 now. Water had cleared up when I left to get home to watch the Leafs beat NJ. The good news I did not loose one tday but maybe that was because I did not hook any. ;D ;D

Was not planning to fish today but the water looked so nice I was glad I had taken my rod along when I went to take a look at it so I could file a water condition report for you all. Only one person was fishing the run I lost the fish the other evening. He was on the other side of the river at the top end so I decided to give it a go for a few minutes. It around 9 o'clock so I was sure someone would have worked through the run

I worked my way thought the run with no success but on the way back up the run I flipped out just at the drop off. For some reason I was looking away when I felt a few tugs but did not react as I guess I was surprised to be getting a bite. When I reeled in the fish had taken all the quarter sized bait of the hook, sneaky guy.

Well as I put on a fresh bait I felt for sure I would get another chance but after 5 minutes of trying I was not offered the opportunity. Just then two anglers I know came to the run on the other side of the river. I thought maybe they could get the fish to bite so I told them I had just missed an opportunity but they could not get the fish to bite either but further down the run one of the boys connects and lands a 11 to 12 pound hatchery fish. ;D

I guess others saw the action and a couple more arrive so I decide I would leave the run to them. Just as I got back to the truck I see another rod bend as an another fish comes to the beach and most likely was a wild fish as it was released.

I guess it proves you do not have to be the first to a run to find success but I must learn to pay more attention as one never knows when your float will be going down. At least this one will not count against my 2 for 12 average as it was not really hooked but maybe if I was watching my Maple Leaf DNE my average would be 3 for 13, maybe next time.

Was out today for a few hrs, water conditions were beautiful, heard of a few fish caught. Was up mid river area, when I passed a couple of guys fishing from the opposite bank of the river, but going the other way, later as I was heading back, they went by on the other bank sporting what must have been a 13 or 14 lb'r, caught at the start of one of the circuits I was following today, so in keeping with Chris's remark" I guess it proves you do not have to be the first to a run to find success"  ;)

Water condition very good but by the reports I got while out this afternoon fishing seems to be spotty but things should improve after the river clears after the forcast of heavy rain on the way for the next few days. Should then make for better fishing but not good for skiing on Cypress. ::)

Water looks perfect today again.

Was out for a few hours. Fished the bottom end for a couple hours but did not see anything. I then drove further up from the Keith Wilson Bridge and was able to hook into one for about couple minutes but it got off.

When I got there, someone hooked and landed a 10lb hatchery doe.

Water was almost ideal yesterday. Maybe even a little too clear in the cannal although its high enough for them to push through. About 4' of vis at the crossing, really nice colour. Saw an older gent catch his first steelhaed ever, down low and it was a hog 15+.

No love for me today. The guys that survey the river ( if you've ever seen them with their waders and float tubes ) said they worked the river top to bottom and didin't see a fish. I know they are around I just can't find one. Today should be good as its dropping and clearing.

Got out this afternoon for my second trip in a month to the Vedder, what is happening to me? ::)

Anyway conditions were good and I had numerous opportunities, 4 times in one spot, once in another run and 3 chances in the last run I  fished near dark. I believe some must of trout, or whitefish as I should have at least hooked one of them. I was using prawns and roe.

As I said I could not be certain if they were steelhead but I did make contact with another fish that was a steelhead for sure as it took me down river a bit and while working it over a snag my leader snapped, it felt like a good sized fish too. :o

My bad luck for the day did not stop there as when I got home I leaned my rod against the house and while bringing in a garbage can from the curb I tripped over the rod and broke about 3 inches off the end of it. >:( :( :-[ :'(

All in a day of fishing I guess, at least my Leafs are winning now. ;D ;D ;D

Broke another steelhead off. I can never remember breaking two steelhead off in a row ever before, needless to say I am using different leader now.
The good part of the outing, I did not break the tip of the rod off this time.

Put a few hours in this afternoon in beautiful water conditions, far better than yesterday. Tried 3 different spots and finally found one just as the sun was setting. It was a nice bright fish too. I say it "was" as after 4 to 5 minutes of playing the fish very carefully it skillfully separated itself from my hook. :o Now I sit at 3 landed for 16 hooked, dismal. ::)

Also saw one steelhead surface the first I have seen this season and also 2 trout just as I was leaving the river as darkness started to close in.

A few anglers out and I know of two nice ones taken as I saw the pictures that were sent to me tonight, both hatcheries too. ;D ;D

Talked to a Spey guy who said he also had hooked two fish. ;) Talked to enforcement who was out checking anglers and he saw some fish as well.

Conditions should hold for the weekend as it felt like it was near freezing as I made my way to the Leaf Mobile.

A while... my guess is it won't be fishable for the rest of the "gear season" if we keep getting temps over 18.
It has been going up 10 cm a day.

was out today at first light. got up but never checked the online river level, because was late in meeting my neighbour to fish today. river was high and dirty when i got there. we decided to go up river and it didn't look very good until we got above allison area. fished down a ways from the hatchery for awhile and i saw a rather huge steely making it's way upstream on the side of the river. had a bit of fungus on the top of it so decided to leave this poor fish to make it's way without hassling it. put a piece of roe on and about 5 casts into this run got a vicious pull down and  after a spirited battle let a about 12lb wild go. went to another run a little bit further down river and after about 20 min looked back and saw my buddy with his rod bent over playing what he let go about a 5lb wild. quit at 11:30 and both got into that ugly mess at the port mann today. all in all a good day considering we weren't expecting to even get a pull for the day! water should be good tomorrow  but have to work. darn :(

It's still a fair bit higher than it has been before last week . The water did clear up somewhat , but having said that it has been raining over night . When I drove over the Veddar crossing bridge Friday evening the water was back to a green color but quite high still , not blow out conditions by any means , just higher than ideal for Steelhead fishing . If your heading out you may want to consider fishing further up stream .

Although quite high the water was perfect on Sunday .

Caught and released a 17lb. hatch buck on the lower  ;D.

Last chance this week for drifters .
Excellent!
Was it coloured up or still fairly chrome?

Just wondering if it's still busy on the weekends or has it died down?  I usually only fish the fri or mon or mid week when I can.   And water conditions?

Oh wonderful, if that was May 1st,  then another one of those fisherman who cannot be bothered to read the fishing regulations.

Yes we should all check the regulations before we fish any body of water. This chap and his wife were very elderly people (over 80) so I gave him the benefit of the doubt or I would have reported him. He packed up as soon as I told him the river was closed below the Vedder Bridge except for fly fishing on May 1.

Maybe I am getting too soft in my old age (over 65). :o

No, not too soft Chris, more likely just more acceptable and receptive to changing times.  I've been in the same position and always the older, less informed anglers did the same thing; realized their mistake and left, thankful for my information.  Younger anglers, well, often times not so much.
Glad you didn't report them Chris.

dennyman, I totally understand your position but c 'mon - 80+ years old and still fishing!! (albeit illegally...) somehow you gotta like that!

Here is a video of one of the last few catches from this season.

Now that most have already moved onto other fisheries, it is time to tally up the numbers. I've added a poll to the thread so please vote.

Many thanks to all who have contributed in the river condition updates throughout the season.

Season isn't over yet....
And water looks GREAT for those who want to fly fish  ;)

I got 11 in 15 trips on the Vedder.... 5 in 5 trips to the Stamp, not a bad year I guess, just wish I could have gotten out more  :'(

you gut chuckers sure do like patting your own backs eh  ::) I was 1 for 1 on gear and so far still a giant goose egg on the fly. Hitting the water in the a.m. to remedy that though  ;D

Headed out to the vedder early in the am with great anticipation.  Last week was perfect and although I didn't catch anything, I had a relaxing time fishing.  Took 3rd rd exit and as I went over the slough it was higher then I'd seen it in a long time.  Sadly freshet is in...  went over KW bridge to look and the water is high and dirty.  Guess that's it for a couple of months.

Looking just above the crossing.

The freshet has come so don't expect good conditions out there....only a week and a bit before the river is closed anyways

I was out there today and even though there was no fish the water was really nice. clarity was anywhere between 2 and 4 feet depending on what run you were in it seemed  ???

Was the vis increasing as you went downriver? I have noticed that the farther down you go the clearer it gets as the clay starts settling. Slower runs may also allow more clay to settle so it would appear clearer than a faster more turbulent run that is stirring everything up.

actually the canal was the dirtiest area which i found sort of weird. Water was pretty nice between the Cable run and Lickman runs.
