I fished the mid river this morning. Landed a jack coho and a number of strong but dark chums. Still some bright coho showing themselves, and quite a few chum around but its obvously slowing down. Good action when the fresh fish are there, but quieter times in between. Probably my last trip to the Vedder, and maybe even salmon fishing this fall.
It seems like I landed way more jack coho this year than usual - got one or more almost every time I went out. I wish I did as well on the mature ones. ;)
Did anyone else find that they were getting more coho jacks than mature?
Oh, and at the end of my morning fishing I stoppped by Tamahi for a look. COs were out checking people and had a look at my coho. Nice to see them out.

Have to agree with you, way more jacks this year. I've never caught so many in all the years of fishing the vedder. One day I was into 8.
-
I didnt get too many jack hoes myself, But I did witness alot of jacks landed. I saw between a group of 5 fly guys, 9 jack coho, this was after the first good rain on the friday.

I only managed 2 adult coho out of the vedder this season but I landed at least 12 jacks. It certainly seems that there were a ton of them.
-
4 adults from the Vedder. No jacks.
-
3 adults and a number of jacks with the last taken on Tuesday.
-
3 adults....lost 3 as well...no jacks
Several large springs and no Spring jacks...and I've heard there were alot of Spring Jacks as well.
-
Seen a couple of spring jacks pulled out at the Stave as well.

The number of Jacks this year should mean a blockbuster year next year for Coho.
The jack returning this year are an indication of the population for next year's return.
A certain percentage return 1 year early as jacks.

i got into a number of adult coho but only could bring in 3 and probly like 4 jacks
-
7 adults for me , a few wild , no jacks , no springs , sofa so good . :)
-
1 clipped adult doe for me...

hey guys i could really use some advice. do i just have bad luck or am i doing something wrong. been on the vedder at different spots about 12 days in october-november and nothing every time i am short floating so my weights off the ground and my float floats freely and i have been using gold colorado blades and pink, red, and white wool. i am going back out tomorrow and would really like to catch at least one coho this year so any advice would be helpful

Have you tried roe?
-
no i have not used roe
-
Then try the roe. ;) ;D

I found roe to not do that great this year for coho.
In fact I only got 3 this year on gear (granted I only fished gear for a total of 4 days this year in september/october).
All 3 were on the Vedder River when I came home from the Island, one was on roe other 2 were on Colorados.
A guy across from me one morning hooked 6 on spoons in a backwash so I would say hardware was working the best.
Also saw a number taken on small egg sized wool ties short floated, and hits were very light.
I sight fished 2 of my coho and neither one of them moved the float on the hit.
On the Island I fished gear for 3 days and didnt hit a single one.
Switched to the fly and in 2 days (6 hours fishing) I hooked 14. Once you find what is working on the particular river you are set to go.
My personal fav is still the fly, then colorados/spoons, and then roe. May be a confidence thing but I only get like 2 coho a year on roe and alot more on other methods.

Agreed 100%!
Much more chance to reach the coho using flies and metal.

My personal best for coho was 8 fish in 3hrs... on a rolled muddler. Probably would have kept hatching them, but my muddler broke off. I had no more muddlers as I was targeting bull trout and just happened to have a muddler in the box. Never had a day anything like it on gear.

Wondering if that muddler happened to be blue... ;)

time of day usually makes a big difference. first bite just before sunrise ....its cold and a bit dark but the fish are greedy for roe.

Every fish I caught either back at home or out here were mostly between 12 pm and 4 pm.
6 of those coho out of the 14 were on my Christmas tree variation (sweet looking fly in the water) and all others were on mickey finn variations and green/yellow muddlers.
