How do you tie the loop knot to attach a fly so that it has freedom to move? What is the name of that knot?
-
Duncan Loop
-
I tried that one but it kept sliding tight on me the guide I was fishing with last time used a different one... does the duncan loop normally pull tight or am I tieing it wrong?
-
Try the rapala knot, it works great even in floro.

You should be able to slide it up and down. I have never had a problem with it. Go on youtube and watch a video of it being tied to make sure your doing it right.

I use the improved clinch knot and cinch it tight just above the fly eyelet. Never had any problems with it. I place my thumb nail over the line just above the fly and press down and then pull the knot tight to the thumb nail and give it a good tug. tight lines

I also use the Non Slip Mono Knot or what is also called the Kreh Loop ;D i have used the Duncan loop but didnt like the fact its closed under any tension.
I use a loop knot on almost every fly i fish even in stillwaters

check out Orvis Knots webpage

I have tried the Duncan Loop, but, wasn't really happy with it.
This season, I just stayed with the Trilene knot. No loop, but seemed quite secure and no break-offs.
Probably will try the Non-Slip loop next season. Haven't tried tying it yet, but, it looks easy. Especially for my clumsy fingers.

I have used this style of knot with great success but I don't use step 9 & ten because I found that with these 2 steps the knot would slide.

Hi Guys,
Have a look at this site if you get bored or the fishing is slow. http://www.netknots.com/index.html
Gordon.

Yeah, does one always use this style of knot or does it depend on the fly being used?
-
I don't like the loop knots that slip. I think the one I use is called the double surgeon's loop. Super easy to tie and seems to have pretty decent strength. The only drawback I've noticed is that it usually leaves a fair bit of a tag thus shortenning your leader a bit every time you tie on a new fly.

Loop knots are great if you're stripping any kind of streamers or fishing chironomids.
-
Non Slip Mono knot is the only loop knot i use. I use this on every fly i fish except for a few salmon streamers that i cast and strip, the loop gives it the wrong action so i stick with Clinch knot then.
