use the SEARCH function and im sure you will get more info then you wish for, trust me there is lots on here if you look for it.

I think the record hatchery on the Vedder is 22 or 23lbs but i may be wrong. Im sure there has been bigger ones but probably not recorded

Here is a basic idea for you to think about.

Baits for Steelhead, Roe Chunks,Roe bags,Prawns,Sand Shrimp, jensen egg with a fluff of wool
Artificials for Steelhead Gooeybobs,Colorados,4 and 6 inch rubber worms usually pink coloured other colours work to,Jigs tipped with prawns

Slow walking speed water will hold fish, Tailouts etc, look for structure, stumps and log jams, large boulder for fish to hide around in.
Fish seams where slow water meets faster water fish along that edge. Dont spend allot of time fishing runs, fish them fast and keep covering water.

Another thing i like to do is.. Look at what other people are using and use something different. I came in behind a guy using prawns i fished chunk roe (Natural Coho Roe) and pulled out a fish. Doesnt happen all the time. but being aware of what others are using will highten your chances

Another thing is, if someone is working a run DONT walk below them, its a great way to get a guy annoyed. If you notice the guy isnt moving at all , ask politly if its ok if you can fish below him most of the time they wont mind.

Hardest part of steelhead fishing is trying to find them... they will usually take what you have offer them.

Steelhead Conservation Tag is NEEDED if you want to fish for steelhead,  once you bonk your fish your done for the day

also you can feel free to ask if anyone is willing to take you out once or twice and show you how to read water and stuff. hardest part of steelheading is learning where the fish will be from one run to another. some guys are so good at this they will hook a fish in every run they hit pretty much and will get at least one fish everyday they head out.

It took me until my 3rd season for steelies until i got my first one landed, didnt even touch one the first year  :'( once you figure out things steelies are fairily easy to get to bite.

Aqua makes great points about fishing through a run quickly and not fence posting in one spot however you can go back to the top of the run and work it through with another presentation which is a great way to find fish also.

big tip i can give you is to not just walk past any water when your learning, fish EVERYTHING even if you think it wont hold fish. you might get shocked by where they will sit in certain runs. I got one fish (16lbs) in a tiny little slot that was maybe 2 feet deep and the water was super clear  :o

Memorize the water if you see a steelhead hooked. Under similar water conditions, steelhead will be holding in the exact same spot.

Be willing to walk the river and adjust your strategy based on the river condition. There is no one hot spot each day. At high water, focus on the side channels. Watch for bottle neck spots where fish will pile up below obstructions, particularly towards evening. Be patient and never give up. Steelhead can be a fish of a thousand casts althougth there are the lucky early birds who can get their fish at first light at the usual hot runs.  I agree that there were some excellent posts on steelhead in the past. Search them out. Good luck to your steelheading journey..  :)

I beached 6 steelhead today, and lost 3 more.  took home a limit of 4 hatchery fish with the largest being 14 pounds and the small fish was 8 pounds.  Pretty epic day and all without bait.  BTW, it was on the Methow River in Washington State.

Yea...but i thought i got busy later in year...for the steelhead

It does.

Winter steelhead season on lower mainland rivers starts in late december and lasts until the end of april and into may if you flyfish.

When I said that steelhead season never really ends is that there are rivers that will have fresh fish in them at all times of the year.

Title: Re: STEELHEAD SOON
Post by: HOOK on November 02, 2009, 07:51:47 PM
steelhead start showing up now in tiny numbers and getting increasingly more until the peek which if i remember right is around February. Of course im talking about the Vedder. My first day out is usually Boxing Day (not in the derby) and if im fishing gear i have gotten a fish every boxing day so far that i have fished (after my first 2 yrs of nothing of course)

I find i usually catch most of my fish from February until April because of the warmer water temps the fish are more willing to move larger distances to attack things. I also have found they fight better and better as the water warms up  ;D

there has been some great advice and tips added in this thread but the best one is Get out there and fish, fish, fish and watch others that are having success. nothing better then on the water experience.

Thats what I was saying a few posts back as well.I ppl watch(pro-say)..and see what they are doing diff then me..or what they might be using..and such..and just try to go out as much as I can.And I love being out on the river..its awesome..we have all this, so why not enjoy it and take care it while we can.

is the canal a good spot to fish for steelhead because i know last season i didnt catch anything in the canal but i i did at the top of the river but i did see someone take one in the canal im just wondering if its harder to catch them there then lets say mid river or something.
Title: Re: STEELHEAD SOON
Post by: Steelhawk on November 03, 2009, 12:05:47 AM
The canal is good for newly arrived fish. Fish it with the rising tide. Also when the water is super low in March/April and most steelies are trapped there. But it will be a zoo also. So I prefer to walk the river for some solitude and exploring some pristine waters instead of jamming up with every one. Kind of hate to see the way steelheading is done there, as it is more like coho fishing instead of the hunting game of steelheading. Just my humble 2 cents.

I hear ya...it gets crazy on the river. And if the steelies are like the coho..i'll be bushing it to try some nice spots where no one is.

Just cured up a batch of roe, this time for steelhead.  Been playing around with new recipes trying to get the perfect roe.  This is my best to date.  The skein seems to be much tougher than Procured roe, while the eggs stay more supple.  I like it.  Its anise-scented instead of that terrible cure-in-a-can smell.

This after 5 minutes of being washed around the sink in warm water to test durability.  Procure lost 50% of its eggs, this new recipe lost maybe 2 eggs off a 20 egg cluster and the skein stayed tough.

Didnt someone actually make something like that... I think I saw it at Canadian Tire.

A much better way would be to get yourself a pendulum and walk up and down the river.  When the pendulum suddenly starts swinging with a different arc, thar be the feesh.  Its easy man.

it has a wireless transducer that you tie onto your line, cast it out then reel it in slowly and it wirelessly sends the signal to the screen mounted on your rod.  Then you have a picture of the bottom and you can retie with your bait and fish.  OR you can leave it floating for a real time pic.  Don't know that it would be any good on a faster moving flow.....

I had another awesome day on the Methow.  Caught 6 more steelhead.  That's 16 in 4 hours of fishing this year.  Big fish today was 12 lbs.  I got owned by one that easily pushed 20.  Kept my hands shaking for 10 minutes afterwards.

Just wondering if any/many of you flyfish for Steelhead in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley waters. Are there better local rivers then others for Flyfishing? I got a taste of it in late September when I was on the Thompson River when I was fishing for trout with a #8 Doc Spratley and ended up catching 2 nice Steelhead in one day! I was totally suprised when I hooked the first one - didn't know they went after flies that small.

You might have a shot at some late coho or chum. It's never a bad idea to give it a try. My first steely trip is usually 26th of Dec as it's become a tradition on the ved. The local flow I start first weekend in dec even though you might not see anything for weeks. My favorite time of year is coming. I can feel it but until then I'll have to chase some searun cutt's and bulls :'( ;D ;D anyone feel sorry for me ;D
