What kind of hooks is every one using out there has any one found something that doesnt bend straight when an 18 pound coho runs straight down river
-
#2 red Gami's, never ever had one bend on me. But I was forced to buy some cheap corner store hooks the other day that cost me a coho. STAY AWAY FROM LASER HOOKS......
-
Owners cutting point.
-
i just started using the dne size 2 hooks. they are barb less but very effective. i lost all my coho this year most right after hook set except the one i was using the dne hooks with.not sure if its the hook or the hook setter tho :D :D they did stay sharp for longer then other hooks i have used and did not bend at all
-
1st: Gami
2nd: DNE
-
gamakatzu never had any issuse with them bending or breaking
-
to be honest I have never seen or heard of a hook bending on a fish hooked in the mouth and that goes for even the biggest springs that we hooked on #2's.
I really like the Owners, as well as RVRFSHRS
-
gammys are the best because they stay sharp a lot longer than the rest of the hooks.
-
I had a Thompson steelhead in the 25lb+ almost spool me and when I cranked my drag tight the #1 Gami came back straight.
Owner Cutting Points are the best, but they are a bit pricey.
-
Red DNE's sizes 1/0, 1 and 2 work best for me.

my fly hooks have often but no so much the other hooks but it has happened. blade hooks bend on a larger fish on me at times. or sometimes a snagg of rocks too.
-
I use Gammies and have never had any problems with them.
Landed springs in the 30's on size 1s and 2s.
If you are using 6,8,10lb leaders and the hooks are bending/breaking before the leader, I'd suggest changing hook brands.

1) Gamy
2) Owner
Tried DNE's (barbless) this year and I hated them. Not sure if it was their design that wasn't allowing for a solid buried hookset, or if the fish were spitting the hook. After loosing 3 ho's in a row, I immediately switched back over to gamimy's and started landing fish again.

i had a size 2 or it could of been size 4 cant remeber but the hook bent on me on a steelhead in the mouth..

i like gammys sz1 on the vedder. i buy the barbed ones and sqeeze the barb, i think the barbed are better than barbless, there is a difference.

Oops!
Just bought 25 DNEs and I'm not impressed they're not sharp at all.
BTW-If you're looking for a deal on Gammies look@ A&N they have the 25 pack for $11.99-much better price than the $16.99 they're asking @ 3Vets.
And whatever happened to those ordinary brown Mustads?
-
I like the old mustads. A&N carries them.
-
how about 100 gamakatsu sz 1 or 2 for 18.49 u.s. at ty-n-hunter outdoor products. in the u.s.a. shipping is resonable.

Not anymore they don't there was nothing like them downtown @ 1:00 today nor was there room for them on the rack, just the high end models.

Yup that's the way to go!

I will be stocking up on Gammies next time im across the border. couple yrs back a buddy went down i gave him money for hooks and he brought me back like 400 hooks for $50 :o unfortunately i have used all of those already by giving them away to people fishing with me and just busting off any fish i dont feel like reeling in LOL
-
1) gami 1 and 2
2) us bought silver (don't choke) eagle claw #2. incredibly strong. and actually can be sharpened which i find not so easy with gami #2 - too fine a point..end up with nuthin..i can sharpen an e-c;aw way sharper then gami in a pinch.
-
do you guys that say you cant sharpen a gami not know how to sharped hooks or something ;) I have no problem sharpening them even size 4's, i can usually get 2 sharpenings out of them before they are no good. Just need to sharpen them without taking off to much metal thats all, and they keep shape and razor sharp ;D
-
owner......period
-
I found DNE hooks cut through the leader when tied with a bait loop, I lost several large fish.
It may be the way that I tie the bait loop - I may try DNEs again looping the line towards me when tying the bait loop.
-
Speaking of the old Mustads which I believe to be Model 92553 the Best Price I could find in Canada is from Tyee Tackle on the Island (http://www.tyeetackle.com/hooks.html)

I use both Gami's and Owner. Prefer the Gami's but Owner has better price most places.
Took a seminar from Peter(used to work at Fred's) about 8 years ago, he demonstrated that most straightend hooks happen when the hook is too small for the fish or it's a foul hook. He was able to demonstrate the a good hook up the hook will be wraped around the jaw of the fish and can't straighten out.
Try it with a small stick, put the hook around the stick and pull as hard as you can. Then put the point of the hook into the side of a stick an pull, see which hook starts to straighten out.
If the water has any color to it I never use anything smaller than a #1 prefer a 1/0. I only go down to a #2 as a last resort with gin clear water. I usually find that the size of the piece of wool has more effect on the fish biting than the size of the hook. Keep the glob of wool really small, the size of a single spring egg or smaller and use a bigger hook than you normaly would (not getting any larger than #1/0) and see what happens....

definitely gamy!

Should have posted this earlier in the week.
re:DNE hooks-found them to be an excellent product-once the hook is set it stays set.
Bought 2/0 and probably could have got away with 1/0 but no matter, the wire is a tad thick but thinner wire means more bending/breaking and nobody wants that.
There's something about the point design that to my mind is somehow counter intuitive but it works well there's no question.
Given the excellent price point I'll be using them again and would recommend them to anyone/anytime.

DNE x2 Very sharp out of the package, strong too, very consistent product.
-
I have tried cheap ones and hate them, 2nd worst feeling in the world is losing a coho on a cheap hook that bends open. The worst feeling in the world is bending that hook back cause you're too lazy and losing a second coho right in a row. I use gammy's mostly and Owner periodically and haven't had any trouble.
-
I know everyone talks about quality of the hooks and people complain that cheap hooks straighten out and such, what I would like to know is why do so many of you cheap out when it comes to purchasing hooks. Hear me out, So you spend endless amounts of money on new rods, reels, new line, waders, boots, vests , terminal tackle, but when it comes to hooks 75% of the people cheap out. All I have to say is why not pay the extra 5/10 dollars on the better quality hooks like owners or gammys.i just think 10 dollars is a small price to pay knowing that you are fishing with a top quality hook . Just a lil rant but seriously what do you all think ?

--not every shop has all the hooks available even from one manufacturer, or they're on order or have to by 50 etc.
--I know its expensive to stock the shelves but that is why often have to order from the internet.
--when you look at the wall it looks full but when you need a specialty hook it's often not there....also just a rant but like rods and reels each of us has their own opinion on what are the best characteristics of a good hook are.

Try the new Gammi wide gap finesse hooks. Very nice bait hooks ;)
