Hi Guys, I have a friend coming out from Alberta and he has his heart set on fishing for sturgeon but we can't afford a guide as we are both starving college students lol. Is there somewhere along the Fraser that we can fish for them from shore? Thanks in advance for any help!

If you do not want to drive you can get sturgeon anywhere from any of the shorelines along the Fraser in Richmond....early season we use eulachons but switch to FRESH roe or rotten salmon by the fall. Big 12-16 oz. lead weights, heavy duty gear and big strong hooks are required. One hour in and out of high tide is best. Slack tide will enable you to present your bait from shore better as the current will not be pulling your line downstream (hence the heavy weights). If you want numbers you must head up river where the salmon are. Sturgeon love rotten salmon and are actively feeding from the mission bridge and up. Remember, to fish above the mission bridge, you must have a freshwater license and a sturgeon tag. Below you can use a tidal license and no tag or stamp is necessary. There is NO retention of Sturgeon anywhere.

We are in Mission so it sounds like I am close to some good spots. I already have my non-tidal license so I think I will get a sturgeon stamp and try to find an access spot to the river above the Mission bridge. Anyone know what road the river can be accessed from?

The information booth on the east side of of Mission can be decent. The bottom is fairly snaggy so bring lots of gear. Just upstream of the mission bridge on the abbotsford side I have done very well from and the bottom is more friendly.

Thanks so much for the info. I will definately post a report on how we do. I know my friend is going to be thrilled if we actually catch one. How much weight will we need to stay on bottom?

At this time of year about 8 oz should be suffice.
The best bait at this time of year is rotten salmon parts. If you in mission your best bet is to take a drive over to the Stave and go on a bait hunt.
I was just out in that area last weekend and had my my friend kicked by an 8ft + fish so there are definitely some big fish that can be hooked into without a boat. Trouble of course is in landing them. My poor old abu 6500 nearly exploded.

How do you keep the salmon on the hook... I'm picturing taking a strip off one of these guys. Do you use that scarf material and basically "roe-bag" it?

Exactly.
Once you make your bags put them in a sealed container and leave them out in the sun for a few days.
Enjoy the smell.... :o

stink bait, works but gross.you can put it in a mandarin orange size sack tied from pantyhose or cut in to strips and mass it on your hook.
Fresh roe or belly strips from a fresh filleted salmon or as many dew worms as you can get on your hook would be as good or probly better .

the gills from a fresh salmon work real well too! like sturgeon candy

Why the belly, fat content?
Also, is that a jet boat going over a log raft in you pic, do you have a bigger pic, cause that's pretty awesome?
