Hey guys, just wondering if there are any salmon to be caught fishing the bars north of Chilliwack such as Herrling Island at this time of the year? Chum, coho, chinook??? I have never fished there outside of sockeye season and don't hear to much about those spots once the rivers closer to the lower mainland fill with fish. Thanks!

You can fish for chum.

The river is currently opened for chum and chinook salmon retention. Depending on which part of the river upstream from Chilliwack, it will be opened for hatchery coho salmon retention starting this week. The opening dates from sections between Mission-Hope, Hope-Sawmill Creek can be seen on this page:

Beyond the salmon season, this section of the Fraser River is quite pleasant to explore and fish. Cutthroat trout, bull trout, rainbow trout and mountain whitefish are your prime target species which can be caught on both light spinning gear and flyfishing gear until late April.
