Was there for 3 hours this afternoon on the west side. I hooked 6 fish short floating blades and landed 3 of them. Pretty busy already. You cannot drive over the dam so you have to pick one side or the other.

I went this afternoon for a couple of hours and was skunked. I saw lots of people snagging fish in the spawning channel. They were even bonking them...pretty sad. .My six year old looked at me and said Dad those people are catching alot of fish Dad why can't we catch some? So I had to explain to him that what they are doing is not fishing. Besides that it was a beautiful day to be on the river.

Ya I took a peek on my way home this evening and was disgusted at the # of people snagging the channel. There were more rods in the spawning channel than the main flow...

Do they actually allow people to fish the spawning channel ?

I was there today with WESTFORM, his daughter and our friend, we were up near the dam in the fast water at high tide when the schools of chum come in, I had 4 chum and one pink on today. In the afternoon we went out to the mouth and WESTFORM hooked into a 6' dino. Great day...a little windy for me, but better than hanging around the house.

I'm assuming fishing in the spawning channel is illegal. Are there any signs posted to inform " anglers "? If there are no signs, why aren't some put up ?
-
I also saw a guy BB a whitefish!

Unfortunately, there is nothing in the regs to say that it is illegal and there are no signs posted. I personally think that it should be posted there at the parking lot, at the bridge and where the channel dumps back into the river. It still baffles be why people would want to catch the old boots in the channel anyway...

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but what constitutes the spawning channel? I am planning to go up there this weekend and I'd hate to be unknowingly fishing in an illegal area. Thanks!

On the east side below the damn there is a small man made channel that you must cross to get to the main flow. That is the channel they are speaking of.

Ah, so it's quite obvious then. Thank you!

I think i know why people keep boot chums. From what i heard from my russian buddy in eastern europe salmon eggs are a delicasy, and the most sought after eggs are chum especially ripe salmon near spawning condition. That is when most of the nutrients have been put into the eggs and the least in there flesh. there not interested in eating the flesh just the roe.

Yes, it is a European delicacy. I have tried it several times and it tasted pretty good. :)
