I've used it as well and have never had any issues. You can also pick up bright pink tape by gibbs and a few other companies that works really well for adding on to lures. Caught about 8 pinks the other morning with a silver lure with some of that tape on it.

I doubt the smell would make any difference. I have been using clear nail polish for head cement when trying flies for over 20 years; the smell has not effected my catch ratio.

I'm just in the process of trying it myself as I've had good success over the last couple of days using a mepps type spinner with a blade that was was white in the underside and pink on the outside.  I'm hoping it will still work with a few of my heavier spinners.

You guys DO realize that you don't have to use a pink lure to catch Pink salmon, right?  Other colours work just as well...

My fishing buddy and I have been doing double blind testing this season. Pink spoons with the right weight are outfishing non-pink lures 5-1.
I had high hopes for my chrome/green and chrome/orange spoons. I guess I'll save them for coho.

We i paint them pink i find it is best to prime them white so the pink will really shine. or else you get a darkish pink.

Also in clearwater i don't think color is so important, but the the silty fraser i go hot pink.
I have tried other colors like green and blue, but i find in the Fraser pink is king.

I had great succes with a chrome spinner in the non tidal fraser. And allmost nothing with pink spinners. However it was the reversed in the tidal portion.
