Title: Campbell River, August 30th 2009: Pinks Pinks Pinks

The river was literally stuffed full of Pinks.   You could see the fresh waves of fish roll up the river.  With the right light angle you could see hundreds in the sandy pool.   Fished with my new fly rod and hooked many.

Smallest Pinks I ever recall, 2-3 lb., a 4 lb. fish was big.  Memory may be failing but I seem to recall Pink runs more in the 3 - 7 lb. range with larger fish not uncommon.

I was out there last week fishing jigs under a float and fly fishing.   It was a lot of fun but I couldn't keep them on with the fly rod very easily - I think my hookup to landing ratio was about 1 to 3.   Most of the time they managed to jump and spit my hook whatever I tried  :)  Pink jigs under a float was very effective.

In general pinks on the Island seem to average more in the 3-4lb range versus Fraser Runs that average a lb or so more. Still it varies from year to year and if they seem smaller it likely reflects poorer ocean feed conditions compared to previous cycles.
