Title: bass fishing info
Post by: apollo on August 31, 2009, 08:22:22 PM
I was out at Mill Lake about two weeks ago fishing for trout and I ended up catching a few bass. The bass were really small but I kind of got the bug. My question is, where would be the best place for me to go (in the lower mainland) to catch some bigger bass  ( and lots would be a bonus) and how would i go about doing that (what lures to use, etc)?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.  P.S. I do have a pontoon boat (single person) and I plan on going this friday. Thanks

You can go to Albert Dyck park in Abbotsford and you will catch lots. I have caught them on a plastic worm and just drag it along the bottom or I have used my fly rod with a olive green micro leech. The fish are not that big but there is lots.

Hey Noxcape, I have tried fish trap several times with no luck. I was fishing with black plastic worms. I was walking around yesterday and the water seems really low. When you say fish the North side do you mean by the dock behind the Judo club. Sorry for the questions I am just getting into bass fishing this year. I have caught alot at Albert Dyck but would like to catch something a little bigger. Thanks

tumbleweed i mean at the even farther north side by the baseball diamonds

poncho you could use your trout rod jsut depends on how long and it rating i have ten different rod for bass fishing

appollo and tumbleweed the ten inch fish are the average size for albert dycke it sucks but its true there are some big ones in there but you can go for years and not catch a big one mill lake at dusk is your best bet

So nox if you were me would you go to mill lake this friday or would you go to trinity western? I dont necessarily want to catch the "biggest" bass but decent size ones (i.e. 1 or 2 pounds). Numbers are more important than size. I await your response. p.s. and any other info you could give me would be much appreciated (eg. time of day, what lures, what part of the lake/pond to fish, etc). Thanks

Your right the government did plant bass in some locations. However, none in the lowermainland. All the lowermainland bass were illegally placed here. Where did they stock in the late 90's? I have looked at the government stocking records all the way back to the 30's and never saw any bass introduced in the 90's. Can you please share the link where we could see these records please.

Although I disagree with the limit of 4 fish per day ( in all bodies of water in which they were illegally introduced ) it is the law. I have written letters as well as others I know to try and get the limit changed in Region 2 to 25 per day. They should be treated just like crappie and other spiny ray fish.

I am not fighting with you. I think your a good guy just dont think you have all your facts. I have no problem with people fishing for any species. I just think that any illegally introduced species should have an open season on them.

We are not talking Skaha. Many of the island lakes had bass planted by the government as well. The problems are on the mainland where these fish are in systems in which resident salmon and trout live. The entire Pitt system which is one of the last remaining rivers that has all 5 species of wild salmon has these bass. Any threat to these wild salmon is a problem.

I dont think their is a problem with creating a bass fishery but create them in closed systems. Put them in lakes where they have no way out into our rivers. I enjoy fishing for bass as well, especially smallmouth who are absolutely fantastic fighters. I have caught a 7lb smallmouth on my 5wt fly rod that took me into my backing twice. It was one of my most enjoyable fish caught to this day.

ok prove is buddy i have never once seen a bass with a salmon smolt or a trout for that matter in it mouth

its funny how in ontario they live in the same bodies of water and there is no one bitching about it
Title: Re: bass fishing info

Bass are vaccuum cleaners....just because you have never seen one with a salmon fry, fingerling, egg, smolt, whatever...in it's mouth does not mean they don't eat them.  You think they live on a diet of frogs and baby ducks alone?  Lets be realistic here and not pretend for the sake of argument that bass are picky eaters.

There are lakes on the island with cuttys and bass sharing the same water.  They have been like that FOR A LONG TIME.....so nobody "bitches" about it.  In fact, nobody here is bitching about it either.....myself and many others just think that imposing a limit on an invasive species is ridiculous and only done to appease a vocal minority.

Don't mean to offend, I certainly enjoy bass fishing as much as the next guy and probably have quite a bit more experience doing so than you'd imagine from my posts regarding this.  Anyhow, its going to go in circles, I can tell already.  I'm done!

Bass are absolutely delicious, my parents retired to Salt Spring Island and there residence is lake front on St Mary's lake, and there are big bass in there. The first time I caught a decent size bass and took it home for breakfast for me and pop, upon our first bite we just looked at each other in amazement. We were very impressed.

There used to be nice bass in Freeman Lake in Garibaldi just up the road from Lucille Lake, but I have not been in there any farther than Lucille Lake for years. However, bass being as hardy as they are gives me no reason to anticipate conditions are any different.

I've eaten smallmouth from a lake on the island where they feed almost exclusively on crayfish and small cutthroat, they were actually pretty good.  I've tried largemouth before and was not impressed with the texture or flavor.  I ended up feeding the rest to my aquarium fish and they quite enjoyed it.  I guess as with any fish its about how they are prepared....raw was probably not the best idea  ;) ;D

Actually truth be told it did swallow the fly. I was fishing two rods at this time. I had one with an indicator and a large leech about 6 feet down, I was casting another line and left the one rod with the indicator in the rod holder. All of I hear the line ripping off the reel. I quickly put down the rod I was holding down and grab the rod with the fish on it. I played it for a while and man I love the fight of those smallies. It jumped several times and gave me a great fight. I got it to the boat and it was bleeding bad. I actually tried to revive it but it just didnt come around.

Here is a better picture of it showing its size

Trust me anything around 7lbs is not going to dwarf my hand. If you met me you would know that ;)

BTW noxscape is right it was an island lake and not a transplanted fish. These fish were put in this lake by the ministry as early as the 30's

Maybe the angle of the fish when the photo was taken has dwarfed your bass but from the looks of it I would say more like a 3 maybe 4 lb tops. I saw a 7 lber this fall caught during a tournament and I could not believe the size of this fish. It was as fat as a football and about 2 feet long.

I have never had the opportunity to fish for Bass, not in the LML, or anywhere else.

Places like this forum are great for me.  I had been away from fishing, of any sort, until 2 years ago (approx.)

Regardless of the 'feelings' about bass in general, I think that I wouldn't mind getting out to try for a few.  Too bad that the bass from the LML don't seem that good for eating.

Thanks for the info. and thanks for sharing so freely!

Min

PS:  BB, I've met you a couple of times and yes, you have big hands.  Mind you I had to look up and I'm around 6'.  Also, please don't take offence at this, but, that picture you took of yourself and that bass; it's not your best side. ;D

Bryan you should have got in on the Digital Scale group buy on FlyBC this summer. Then you'd see your fish is closer to 2.5lbs than it is to 7lbs.

I do have one, you even took the order LOL

Here are some more bass pics

I was fishing in a local back water recently, a place i often catch bass, and trout this time of year. I was a little dissapointed to catch nothing but northern pikeminnow. Large ones as well in fact most were in the 1 to 2 pound range. I feel if there is any species of fish i would like to see eradicated it is the NPN i have opened these guys up before and they feed excluslivley on salmon fry it seems, Bass on the other hand i believe are not such a threat. I dont know how others on this thread feel but I think it is a good idea to not relese these fish if caught there numbers are increasing faster than the food supply they prey on. just my opinion. It seems Rodney thinks these fish are worth the sport, so he may not agree, they fight poorly and are too prolific. Any Thoughts

every year there's the cultus lake pike minnow derby, basically a cull, all the fish are caught and killed. Fun day out for kids to catch little fishes and a day of slaughter to try and reduce some of the numbers in the lake threatening the local sockeye

Brian,
Is it better to launch at the first launch or the one up by the main parking lot?
I thought about taking my pontoon there but I'm a little green on where to go. Also, is there a good place to hop the dyke into the main pond?

TIA
