Title: Albion Test Fisheries Website

FYI I am surprised to see the number of pinks so low in 2007 compared to the chum.

I believe they are still using 8" mesh nets which would result in next to no pinks being caught, thats why there are no chinook jacks caught in there.

I looked at how the Albion fishery works and posted this info in another thread:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally figured out why the Albion numbers seem off - they run different nets on alternate days.
One is designed to catch Chinook (8" mesh), the other is for mixed salmon ('multi-panel' net).

Here are the Sockeye numbers for the last week or so:

Aug 4 – 47 Sockeye (probably the multi-panel net)
Aug 5 – 0 Sockeye (probably the 8” mesh net)
Aug 6 – 11 Sockeye (MP net)
Aug 7 – 5 Sockeye (8” net)
Aug 8 – 34 Sockeye (MP net)
Aug 9 – 19 Sockeye (8” net)
Aug 10 – 23 Sockeye (MP net)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sockeye numbers were huge for the last couple of days:

Aug 16 - 98 Sockeye (MP net)
Aug 17 - 16 Sockeye (8" net)
Aug 18 - 103 Sockeye (MP net)

Quote from the main page for the Albion test fishery: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fraserriver/commercial/commercialalbionchnk_e.htm

"The Albion chinook gill net test fishery has been in continuous operation for the past 24 years.  An 8" mesh net was used exclusively until 1997.  From 1998-2002 an experimental multi-panel net was alternated daily with the 8" mesh net.  The trial with the multi-panel net was initiated to address questions regarding the representation of chinook stocks captured at Albion.  As a result of the analysis from the 1998-2002 multi-panel net study, a modified multi-panel net is fished on alternating days with the 8” mesh net. "

For the pink numbers check the whonnock or cottonwood test nets.

when you look at the Albion test results, it shows about 650 sockeyes and 630 Springs caught within last 30 days.
I'm just curious then why we close sockeye fishing and keep Spring fishing open?  Should sockeye numbers be much more than that?

July 20th to August 20th, 2008 shows 955 Sockeye & 880 Chinook.

There was a Sockeye opening from July 26th July 30th, 2008.

It's sad to look at these figures and compare them to previous decades

It's sad to even compare them to 2001.  There was ten times the amount of sockeye caught in the albion that year, and thats not long ago at all.

100 yds East of the 'old' Albion ferry location.
