my grandpa gave me a mcknight spoon
its about 4" long by 5/8" at its widest
would it be for trout or salmon?

Sounds like one of McKnight's Needlefish Spoons. If so, it should have that stamped on it into the metal. What color?
If it is what I think it is, this spoon is DEADLY on springs whenever they are targeting needlefish...
Cheers,
Nog

You can find some on the net, ebay have some for sale
mcknight being the brand name
5 is the # size
pat pen is patent pending (this is a way of not having materiel \manufacturing details available to the public)

A good metal polish like Nevr Dull (http://www.nevrdull.com) will bring back the original shine and you can dress it up to be half & half with some prismatic tape.
It's a deadly lure still.
