Title: Vedder Words Of Wisdom
Post by: jaez270 on July 17, 2009, 11:02:47 AM
Hey everyone, just looking for some information on fishing the Vedder.
I've never been before and will be travelling out from Edmonton first weekend in Aug.
I could use some advise on a couple spots to fish, gear to bring, and a place to pick up and out of province licence.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as i'm on a pretty tight time line.

Come on gys help a brother out !!!!!!

Your best bet is to go down to a tackle shop and get the guys there to get you the gear as well as some good tips on fishing the river.  The closest one to the river is probably Fred's custom Tackle in Chilliwack.  Reaction fly and tackle is sorta close too (Whatcom Rd. exit Abbotsford).  Your best bet is going to be talking to the guys in the shops.

Better to try the Fraser River at that time of year.

For your freshwater fishing licence purchase, you can do it online before your trip at http://www.fishing.gov.bc.ca

The two main tacklestores in Chilliwack are:

Chilliwack Dart and Tackle
http://www.chwkdart.com/

Fred's Custom Tackle
http://www.fredscustomtackle.com/

As Chris has mentioned, August is typically not so good on the Chilliwack River as it will be the tail end of the red chinook salmon fishery and most fish will not be in their best shape (close or already in spawning mode). Your other alternatives are salmon fishing on the Fraser River, but that can be quite congested especially if your trip coincides with a sockeye salmon opening. Another alternative is to try out the chinook salmon fishery on the Thompson River, where you can also do some flyfishing for rainbow trout.

Also to, only bring what you will take with you out fishing. Do not leave any valuables in your vehicle as we are prone to theft on the Vedder and Fraser.

First week of August is to early for pinks.

Fraser Valley pink salmon fishery typically peaks in the first two weeks of September, so early August is way too early as Jeff has mentioned, especially for the Vedder River.

For early August, pink salmon are more abundant in Burrard Inlet and Howe Sound.
