Title: Rolley lake flies
Post by: ray on July 04, 2009, 06:43:41 AM
Im going camping up to rolley lake camping next week and was wondering if it was worth while to take the fly rod with me or just leave it home, and was wondering what flies would work this time of year. thanks

We were just up there about a week ago and I got all my fish on a full sink line with a pink booby fly.
Nothing else seemed to be working on the bright days. I never fished the evening though.

Pumpkin head fly slays the rainbows in that area for me on a floating line and about 20 feet of leader. i even add a little lead to the ones i tie to get it down a little more and it works wonders :D

I will second the pumpkin head. In fact it is a good fly for almost any lake.

I cant find any of the beads for the head of the fly. beadworks only has reddish orange beads so i was wondering if they will work or if someone knows another place that might help. thanks.

Reddish orange, red, gold, copper, silver bead heads will all work well with Wooly Buggers.
The Pumpkinhead is the "hot" fly lately but you don't need to get hung up on precisely imitating the pattern.

No but the orange silver lined bead is key. Ray where are you located.

I have several Dozen Boobies that I tie.

Well if you where near Maple Ridge I would of given you some from what I have as I have more then enough. If you want to pick some up on your way to rolley let me know. I might even be able to get some flies already tied up for you. No charge of course.

Yup. Can't catch anything without an orange silver lined bead.

For the pumpkinhead fly the orange silver lined bead is key. Probable why they call it a "pumpkinhead"

So you are saying that orange silver lined beads are critical to produce a pumpinhead, or that a pumpkinhead will outfish any other wooly bugger in Rolley lake?
Clearly I am saying that wandering around town to find the exact bead to produce the exact fly is a waste of time.
The pumpkinhead has certainly been well marketed, though.

We are talking about the same Fraser Valley 12 inch hatchery fish are we not? These fish are stupid. Just tie on any green flashy micro leech and you will catch fish. One thing I have learned over the years is dont over think fishing. Just go out, experiment and have fun :)

I will second that the fish in Rolley and Mike lake must have been fed green food at the hatchery because they will eat anything green doesn't matter really what shade just not fluorescent. try wooly buggers, leeches, and micro leeches
