Title: Bear in Rice Lake

I saw a Black Bear in Rice Lake.
It was the first time in my 38 years life. The country I came from, Bears are only in the Zoo.
I was fishing trout on the northern side of the lake. Suddenly I heard someone from the opposite side of the lake making noise. Following his finger tip I saw a black Bear right behind me 10-12 feet away.
I was so scary, I forgot to move.
Anyway, it just looked and walked away ignoring me.

As a newcomer to this Bear country, I must know how to face Bear and cougar.

Someone please ADVISE what will be the right thing to do in such situation.

No problem when you are in bear country, just make sure your fishing partner weighs 70 kilos more than you and is at least 30 centimeters shorter. Oh and they gets to carry the salmon sandwiches and the honey.  ;D  Make sure you put an open can of sardines in the pack as this some times helps. ;D ;D

Train hard for the 100 yard dash......   and make sure your partner runs slower than you do.  ;D ;D

I was told by a hunter that black bears are generally harmless. Don't panic, make yourself look big and make loud noise. Be very careful if the adult bear is accompanied by cubs. They are very protective and will charge to protect their offspring.

It can be a little scary at first, just back away slowly.  Living on the North Shore, we're fortunate to see them now and again.  Had a friend from Overseas visiting last year.  He had to miss his bus because of a bear hanging around the bus stop.

buy a bear peper-spray. if the bear gets too close (they approach slowly and display lack of interest before they charge), that can help. also honking cans can scare them away. if you get to close to them by mistake, they get scared and charge to scare you: stand your ground and slowly back away, but don't turn your back to them. if they get close to you after you saw them, they prepare to charge and get you; fight with everything you can (rocks wood etc); never turn your back on them or run; there is an excellent video at burnaby public library explaining bear behaviour, what to do, and stories from people that made it through a bear attack.
if the bear gets you after a charge to scare, you have a chance playing dead;
if the bear gets you for food, screeming can get somebody to help and scare the bear away; it will run away if if didnt kill you yet.
