June 6 there is a fishing derby being held at Alouette lake. 99$ fee per person. early bird price is 75$. Kids under 12 are free I think. I've heard rumors that top prise is 10 000$. Just a rumor I think. being sponsored by Hatch Matchr flyshop in Maple ridge. Dolly fishing up there has been so so. pulled a huge one out 2 weeks ago and a smaller guy. Pics are in the fish porn page 5.

That was a rumor alright. 1st prise is more like $5,000. I had a meeting with Dean (the coordinator) last Tuesday; the posters are out but allot of the details are still up in the air. There will also be an Outdoor Lifestyles Show the weekend of June 27th; expect some good speakers on the show stage. When I get more details I will post them for you.

There is an add for the derby in the latest issue of BC Outdoors

This derby is being put on by the Maple Ridge chamber of commerce. For more details you can contact them.

any results on the alouette lake fishing derby?

I did not enter but talked to a few people that were in the fishing derby. The biggest fish a 3lbs was caught by a thirteen year old. He received a rod and some gear to go with it. Second price i think was $250 and a third price was $50. There were three tagged mystery fish released before the derby but none were caught. One was a free car, second was $5000 and not sure about the third price.
In a lake this size isn't it near imposible catching the tagged fish? But thinking about it would'nt the released fish swim around the dock where they were released for a couple of hours ? If the fish were from the hachery maybe people should have used pellet pattern and fish near the dock. ???

I was in the derby and it was very well run and a great time! Biggest fish was a 3.56LB bull trout, and the man won $500! The next category was combined weight rainbow and kokanee total of 4 fish was 3.3LB which won $250 and there was biggest pike minnow category. and lots categories for the kids! They gave a way a lot of great prizes including a trip to stuart lake in fort saint jonh with 5 days accomodation including gas for the ride up there and registration for the fishing derby with the first prize of $10,000! There were lots of fish caught on and off shore and Id recommend it to any one for next year! it was only $50 not $100 and it was worth it! The registration included a free lunch, shirts, door prizes, coffee, donuts... etc. etc!! Well worth it for a great day out on the water.

Also, the tagged fish were released 48 hours before the derby... location unknown.

I as well was in the derby with 4 friends and had a blast. The derby blew my expectations out of the water. I had a ton of fun met some great people and will sign up next year in a heart beat. We caught a ton of Kokanee and would have had more in the boat; if only the captan and I could have put the fish in the net (our leaders were way too long, now that I look back). I should say one of the young ladies that were with us caught most of the fish including a nice 1.4lb lake trout, that put her in second place for total weight and she took home $250.
Watch the Pitt meadows chamber of commerce website to see some great pictures. They should be up in a week or so I was told. http://openforbusinessmrpm.com/cms/index.php (http://openforbusinessmrpm.com/cms/index.php)

What is the average size of the kokanee being caught in Alouette? What proportion are "keepers"? I'd like to have some fun on a light fly rod. Are they taking pink/red micro leeches? How about bloodworms? Thanks.

I would use krill on a glow hook with a small egg weight or split shot

The derby was great, and for those of you na-sayers who didn't come out; you missed a fun time.
The boat launching in the morning was amazing. I wish I could have filmed it, three boats at a time without any hitches. It was like someone choreographed it.
lots of kokanee caught along with a good number of other species.
Personally I, along with the Reel Life Team had a great time introducing a good number of kids to fly tying.
-
Too bad this was big secret?
Never seen it posted on any other fishing forums?
-
hmmmm.........I missed it , that sounded like fun ! I do agree , that lake is too vast and deep for planting 3 tagged fish. :-\
This derby in California sounds like fun as well.

It was advertised in the BC Outdoors magazine and Match Hatchr fly and tackle shop. I think most people only took a quick glance at the poster and walked away when they saw the initial price of $99 per entry. Even the registration form said that it was $99 after the entry fee was dropped to $50 and I think a lot of people saw the price and were a turn off. :-\
