Title: What is your "go to" rod and reel combo
Post by: The Fish Hunter on April 07, 2009, 01:02:16 AM
I like to rock with a Abu Garcia c4 6600 and a 7ft Berkley rod. I LOVE the Abu reel because I can use it with almost anything!

I don't have a single go-to rod and reel combo - but here's what I use depending on the situation:

For Stillwaters (I always have 2 rods):

- Sage 590 SLT with Hardy LRH Lightweight reel for dry line setup
- Sage VPS 590 with Hardy Viscount Mk III reel (clear intermediate sink or type 3 sink)

For Rivers:

- Sage 896 RPL+ with Hardy Ultralight Disc (large salmon - chum/springs)
- Sage 796 XP with Hardy Ultralight Disc LA (small salmon & steelhead)

Gear:

- GLoomis GL2 drift rod & Calcutta 200 B with 12 lb mono

awesome rod. It's a hell of a lot lighter than my 11'3" GL2. Easier to fish the whole day with. It got me this bad boy:

NEW go to rod is a Shimano technium 10'6 with an Abu C4 reel. Old was the trophy XL with the same reel; now loaded with 65lbs toughline which I find much more fishable than the old fireline.

Trophy 11'6" Custom Series 10-20lb medium casting and Daiwa Millionaire CVZ-300A baitcaster.  I prefer the retrieve and smoothness/finesse of drag on the Daiwa reel but I still prefer my Calcutta for distance casting on the Fraser.  The action on the Trophy rod is good for small fish like cap coho but can also subdue large springs while helping to cushion your leader.  Its only drawback is it is rather heavy.

He made smaller fly fishing reels, but when it came to CP reels he made 4 up to 4 1/2. I believe anything below would be custom one of kind orders, he did make a 3 5/8 but these reels would be way north of $1000

I talked to a couple guys that both said for a while he was selling a package deal of 2 reels - one 4" + one 3 3/4" for a discounted price.  They said they bought them(one guy said it was a wedding gift from wife) so I assumed that it wasn't custom.  3 5/8" sounds  crazy
