when i was young, we would take an old bicycle rim without the spokes, cut down a burlap sack from potatoes and tie that to the rim so it would create a net with a stiff rim. rope attached at four points and bait set in the bottom of the burlap and tied in with wire. the trap settled on the bottom and crabs would enter. the only way to ensure keeping the crab was a fairly quick retrieve.
seeing as there are different laws now and the home made trap may damage small crabs, why not check out army navy, there are really cheap (20 bucks) for a small clamshell style.

I did the same sort of thing as dan-o but instead of using burlap I'd suggest using netting. Burlap is a PAIN to haul up and is slow to bring up because of the water resistance. My "stage 1" trap was made of burlap :) Youre going to want about 2.5 feet of hang to the netting. Run a wire across the rim from one side to another, and throw a bait box in the middle of that. It will be a better option than wiring it up to the bottom of your trap as if you put it on the bottom, it may end up drifting under the rim and making the bait inaccessible to the crabs, if that makes sense.
Bike rim works great though and you can easily drill through to tie your four ropes to. I ran them all through a ring before tying them together in a knot , seemed to help. You can basically just sew the netting together using bailing twine.
I found that my trap worked best if i left it down for a maximum of ten minutes per haul. This keeps crabs from getting their fill and leaving..
Good luck, I had great success with my homemade trap...it's always more rewarding when you do well on homemade gear !

My dad used to make them from bicycle rims as well. Caught tons of crabs from the local docks.

the round style traps work well much, much better than the triangle desin. But the large box type traps are better if you are going to leave the trap in for quite awhile.

If your making your own I have heard ( might be vicious rumour) that the Crabs don't like the metal on traps. So use plastic coated wire, or wire frame and netting, or as some have done make them out of plastic milk crates. Sorry no pictures. I made some out of tomatoe plant frames and chicken wire but wasn't too successful.

I would agree that a round design seems to work better.

The most successful crab trap I made was out of a bird cage. The cage would normal stand up but I laid it down. Don't remember doing too much altering. It always seemed to catch a few legal size crabs. Made me laugh every time. It was small so it didn't hold many but always seemed to catch a few legals. Still have it somewhere. I will have to dig it up. Cannot remember how I did the doors. Will find it in the garage somewhere.
